Koh Samet

One of the most beautiful Thai islands, Koh Samet serves as a popular getaway for Bangkok residents, owing to its proximity to the country's capital. A full range of accommodation can be found on its beaches, the most popular areas for travelers being Ao Prao and Sai Kaew. A large proportion of Koh Samet is national parkland and international visitors are required to pay a small fee to enter.

The main point of arrival on Samet is Na Dan Village, where ferries from Ban Phe Pier in Rayong arrive several times a day. Getting to Rayong from Bangkok can be accomplished easily via buses or even metered taxi.

Though Samet has a healthy beach bar scene and hosts regular parties on the sand, there are also plenty of calm spaces for those seeking respite. Samet is generally more skewed towards couples and families, with swimming and sun-bathing two of the more popular pastimes on the island. Snorkeling, diving, and fishing trips are also worthwhile pursuits here, and are comparatively cheaper than the same activities further south. For something different, Samet also offers fire-spinning classes out of Na Dan Village.

As with all Thai islands, the seafood on Koh Samet is cheap and fresh. Sunset barbecues are routinely staged on the beach and street vendors, as always, provide a vast range of snacks any time of day.
