Krabi
This once sleepy provincial capital was for many years merely a transit point for visitors travelling on to Koh Phi Phi and the Railey Peninsular. Those days are long gone now, and the town of Krabi has reinvented itself as a pivotal hub, with a busy international airport, a booming property market, and newly-built supermarkets and shopping centers that have rocketed Krabi into the 21st century.
Many of Krabi’s hotels are located right in the center of town, or along the waterfront, where the long-tail boats coming and going offer a glimpse of the peaceful, fishing village that Krabi once was. For many years the only hotel accommodation in Krabi was aimed at the backpacker market, things have changed now, and there is solid choice of well-appointed rooms and suites offering all the amenities one expects from an upmarket Krabi hotel, yet at a very reasonable tarif.
The list of attractions around Krabi is endless, with such gems as the Crystal Pool, the Hot Springs, the Phanom Bencha National Park, and of course the postcard perfect beaches of Railey and Klong Muang, all easily visited as a day trip. During the evenings the best way to experience the laid-back Krabi lifestyle, is to wander down to the pier and sample the local market food alongside the families and friends that gather there every evening.
For the connoisseur of Thai cuisine, Krabi offers the best of regional cuisine that is impossible to find in the tourist-oriented restaurants of the beach resorts. To be honest the City Market, though rustic, is undeniably the best source of quintessential southern Thai dishes, though for those wanting a little more of a dining experience, ask for directions to Ruen Mai, or Ruen Tip, two highly-esteemed restaurants famous in Krabi, attracting food lovers from all over the country. It’s rumoured that business men will even fly in from Bangkok, just to eat lunch here, before returning to the capital.
