The beach in Ao Nang is okay but the water is not crystal clear and gets stirred up by people bathing. On the other hand the service by the massage booths is really great. They serve you with chair, pillow, tea/coffee and fresh fruit for free! (Of course they expect you to buy massage or drinks from them if you are getting any but that's fair). If you go to Ao Nang you should be prepared to go on trips to other beaches most days.
