While the sea off of the Tubkaak is lovely, the best water - the clear blue kind from photos - is around Phi Phi Island and other islands. Longtail boats and speed boats can be hired (arranged by the front desk) to reach some of the island destinations. Also - beware, when you arrive you might here a loud screeching sound that sounds like a metal saw cutting into stone -but it is actually the cicadas in the trees! They are mainly on the road side (in the mountain across from the hotel) - and are mainly audible in the day. But they blend in fairly well and become hardly noticeable. When you first get there though you might think there is a construction site nearby...but never fear, there isn't.

  • Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : We did two excursions - the day snorkelling trip to Phi Phi Island and the longtail boat from the beach to Hong Islands. Seeing the waters of Phi Phi was definitely worth it, but in high season just be aware it will be packed with other boats and tourists. Hong Islands were not only close to Tubkaak but beautiful and worth the visit. There are some nice white sand beach coves on the right (north) side of the island, one of which can be explored by boat. The white crescent beach on the front of the island is also beautiful and less crowded than Phi Phi. We hired a sea kayak and went around the island. What a blast! We brought our snorkeling gear and stopped to swim along the way. Just one note: bring your own water and food to Hong Island as there is nothing available. And be aware too, the current/waves on the side of the island facing Tubkaak can get pretty rough - so make a judgement on that and pre-arrange the long-tail boat driver to pick up up if you see that making that final turn back to the beach will be too rough.

Overall a lovely experience. The beach is fantastic and we had a lovely time. If staying longer, there are options to go to outlying islands, including even Phi Phi.
