Great hotel but expensive

we had a great time during our 6 nights at the mercure. the hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the main shopping mall, and a similar distance from the beach. it is far enough out of town to be quiet, but close enough to get to restaurants and shops easily.
our room was larger than average, with a huge bed. we were only given two small pillows, which wasn't enough. the room is separated from the bathroom by a glass wall, perhaps for people who want to watch tv from the bath.
the pool area is very large, but gets busy in the afternoons. the pool and jacuzzi are quite cold (the coldest i've been in in thailand), which is nice to cool-off in, but would be too cold for small children to play in for long periods of time. annoyingly, lots of guests put towels on longers at 7am, and then don't use them until after lunch. the hotel should stop this.
we didn't try the breakfast in the hotel but friends we travelled with found it to be disappointing. oasis cafe (turn right out of the hotel and walk about 20m) serves tasty breakfasts and good coffee at reasonable prices (and has free wifi).
the moon bar on the top floor of the hotel has a tiny pool and a bar, is a nice place to sit to watch the sunset, but, as in most hotel bars, drinks are hugely overpriced unless you go during happy-hour.

As mentioned, the Hotel is in a great location. However, we did find the rooms to be a bit outdated and needing a make over. Staff were friendly and did everything possible to ensure your stay was enjoyable.

helpful in arranging for early check-in. request for high floors & airport transfer during booking online not attended to.. service satisfactory. cleanliness satisfactory except for bathtub. i was releasing the water down the bathtub when suddenly, 'black' water flows up again & fills the bathtub! i was shocked & called the room service. the man came & cleaned up the bathtub. however, i didn't have the courage to use it again. location is not exactly excellent from beach & bangla road. slow in responding to request for adaptor & toothbrush.

this hotel is nice and i would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in patong. it's not quite in the thick of the craziness, but easy enough to walk to if you want. we found most of the staff really helpful and lovely (except for one grumpy lady). we had a little trouble with the internet, if you buy credit check that the account works straight away. hotel pool was crowded and only sunny half the day, there were some people throwing footballs across the whole pool which was really annoying, but there is another roof top pool which was really lovely.

The room had a mouldy smell. The next morning I noticed a puddle of water on the floor and realised that it was from the air-con vent. I noticed that the vent had slight black mould which is probably where the mouldy smell came from. Air-con temperature control do not seem to work.
