basic rooms, affordable, poor service
the spanish restaurant at akwa 2 was great, it was affordable and located in a central location
overall I wouldnt recommend this hostel. we chose it because it was listed in lonely planet. we stayed at akwa 2, and everytime we had an issue we had to walk 5 blocks, or wait for the day cleaners. the key they issued us didnt work, the rooms werent clean, the kettle and tv were broken, and the safe weighed 1 kilo and was not secured to anything. the beds were not comfortable. it was a funky atmosphere, and the spanish restaurant on the main floor was excellent, and od recommend eating there regardless of where you stay.

Excellent
Location, Staff, Value
I personally thought this place was great for the value. This is a guesthouse and not a hotel. It is more expensive than a hostel but cheaper than a hotel. You basically get what you paid for. You can't expect to pay these prices and find hotel like accommodations with this location... I booked a standard room and had a chance to stay there for 3 nights and even though the weather wasn't great, the owners were very welcoming and try their best to help you. Obviously there are circumstances with which they are unable to help you with which is understandable. The owners treated me as if I part of their family and by the end of my stay I really did feel like I was part of the AKWA family (thanks for the seafood dinner guys). I thought the rooms were fine and was comfortable enough for me to sleep in. It was clean and the bed was comfortable which is enough for me when staying at a guesthouse. Even though there are two buildings, they are not very far apart. It is only about a 5 minute walk in between the two buildings and if you don't want to walk, they offer a motorcycle shuttle service. They also have a bar/restaurant where you get 15% off if you are a guest. They have both Thai food and western food and is the only place I have found yet in Thailand that has sangria. The location of the guesthouse is also great, very close to the beach (maybe a 2 minute walk). You can also book tours through the guesthouse which is convenient. I booked a 4 hour tour around the island and it was worth the price. I would definitely stay here again the next time I visit Samui. Perhaps not everyone had the experience I did but you really have to come to Thailand with an open mind.

Cheap, interesting decor, value for money
locaiton, cheap
A group of us booked five rooms. We were housed in two different locations - I didn't realise that the Akwa was split into two separate buildings a block from each other. The ones we stayed at were in a side street. It was cheap, décor is a bit different, however cleanliness left a lot to be desired. Also, there was no water available to drink, even though there was a huge fridge in the room. It would have cost them about 10 baht to just make that little bit of difference. Beds were uncomfortable, couldn't use the balcony because of the smell. Also the electricity went off for the entire following morning so nobody could take a shower or find their way down the pitch black stairs. However, it was cheap enough.

Less then expected
Good food, near to the beach, big balcony
The food and coffee are good. The food portions are a bit small. I had the penthouse room booked, and expected a big nice room, but the balcony counts to the roomsize, but you can't use the balcony during the day - no shadow. The bed is ok. The room get very hot during day - goid they have two air con and a fan inside. The hotel in general is ok, but already a bit old. Internet wasn't working well in my room. One day no room cleaning. The stairs to the rooms are really very steep. Maybe the normal rooms are good value for money, but not the penthouse. I wouldn't book again.

Nice and cozy place
Staff, good food, atmosphere
We really liked our stay at Akwa Guesthouse. The staff was very nice and helpful and the food they offered was really good! The atmosphere was very friendly. The air con room was a bit old but clean and had a funny comic style design. Unfortunately there were very many mosquitos inside the room and we were very happy that we had brought a mosquito-net. Would stay there again.
