Great architecture of the resort premises. Wonderful service. Fine food/dining at the restaurant. Value for money
There is water access through the rocks but there is no private sand beach. There is one nearby however. Another concern for some could be too many steps when walking in the resort area.
We really enjoyed staying in The Kala. The resort features the modern and at the same time very traditional architecture. Very good design decisions throughout. Wonderful service provided by nice and friendly people. The breakfast (was included) is quite good with 3 options to choose from. Our overall dining experience at the resort restaurant is positive. Good value for money.

great seaview room, big tub, friendly & helpful staff, nice breakfast. breathtaking infinity pool!! not crowded.
only 3 choice of breakfast. small lizard/geico in room, no free airport transportation if book on agoda
it was exactly what i had wanted a private getaway. didn't want to stay at chewang beach, it is too busy too many ppl. the infinity was very nice & since the hotel doesn't have too many guests, there were at most 5 other ppl in the pool, so it was very nice & quiet. the view in the room was absolutely fabulous. i didn't mind i didn't have direct access to the beach. i would rather stay in the pool! the hotel staff were all very helpful & friendly, with exception with maybe 1 lady at the reception who became annoyed when we asked too many questions about the car rental. that wasn't very nice. other than that, they were all great!!
Hotel Feature Tip : rent a car.

gorgeous architecture and interior design (many natural materials),
friendly staff,
good restaurant with great wine list,
spectacular views
if I would have to write something here than it would be the road where it's laying on (although the front of the hotel has a high wall with floating water over it (very nice!)
The Kala hotel is a very unique hotel with only seaview rooms, even out of your bathtub! The view from the infinity pool and relaxing area on top of the rocks is very serene. There is no beach in front of the hotel but you can borrow their kayaks to reach in 2 minutes a little sandy beach. It lays between Chaweng and Lamai and is not a touristy place. Unfortunately nearly every hotel lays on the busy road that goes along the sea. Still I can absolutely recommend this hotel to chill out for a couple of days.

Interiors, ambiance, friendly staff, location
variety in food, no pick up and drop facility
Nice hotel with great ambiance, nicely done rooms with most amazing sea view one can have( We stayed in a deluxe room). Rooms were tidy and nicely decorated. Hotel had some free activities for the guests which made our stay all the more pleasant. We just loved the overall experience of our stay in the hotel.

The numerous steps, the blazing sun, the inroom slippers
We just returned from a 3 night stay from The Kala at Koh Samui.
It was a very wonderful, relaxing trip, all thanks to the amazing view and the amazing staff of the Kala, nothing was too much trouble for them, you just had to ask!
All the rooms offer a fantastic sea view. On our 3rd day, we decided to change room due to too sunny balcony. We specified the room and got it without problem, The view in the 1st room was good, the view in the 2nd was even more gorgeous!
There were a lot of steps, hence it is not really recommended for children nor the elderly. Precisely because of the steps, that is why the view is commanding. During dusk, we managed to go all the way down to the platform on a cliff, the view is just astonishing. And the best part was, there were no other guests around!
The Kala is a cozy establishment. Although there are other guests, you do feel like you are the only ones around at times.
There are only 3 choices to the breakfast. I'd recommend the Han Chao set (porridge and side dishes), its really delicious!
We ordered room service for one of the nights, and the food was good.
Contrary to previous reviews, our food came within 5 mins (while at the restaurant), and within 15 mins (for room service). In fact, all our requests were attended to very promptly. Ocassionally when it was not so quick, it is attributed to communication problem (they didn't quite understand us).
We tried the Thai massage a few times, it is very relaxing! Much better experience and ambience than those at the beach (the one at Lamai beach was quite good too). Highly recommended. The prices were reasonable, 1200 THB for a Thai massage, and the hotel gave us 500THB voucher to offset, what a good deal!
There is also an internet room, going online is a breeze.
The Kala also provides transport to the nearby Thong Yang beach (5 mins walk away to your right), as it does not have a beach on its own. You must try the Tom Yum Goong, fried Thai curry with chicken there. It is eve

Location is great, view is stuning, decoration is stylish, staff is friendly
Minor details (locks, paint in some places), the spa does not at all take advantage of the great location, which is a pity (windowless rooms), choice of dishes in the restaurant is limited.
If you are looking for a perfectly quiet, romantic stay in Samui, the Kala is the place. Privacy, especially between week-ends is really a characteristic of the place. You may feel like at home. The decoration is very stylish, the view is marvelous, the sun deck is a nice place to retreat, the swimming pool is magnificent. All in all, a perfect stay for a couple. Don't miss it

Best view on the island! Amazing architecture, great staff, lovely food, privacy, quiet.
Only thing would be that the wifi didn't work very well in our room. And it might be a bit difficult to get to if you didn't have a car/scooter. Nothing else really!
We stayed at the Kala for 3 nights in Feburary and it was absolutely wonderful. All the rooms have a sea view and what and it truly is the best view on the island. We booked a standard rooms and were very pleasantly surprised - it was big, with a lovely stone bathroom and huge bathtub for two and a good sized rain shower. The bed was massive and very comfy. We stayed on the top floor and I would definately recommend that rather than the ones below.
There were a couple of private pool villas right by the cliff and they looked amazing - they are a definate for honeymooning couples!
The staff were wonderful and very attentive to all our needs. And the food was superb - we had dinner there one night and it was certainly one of the best meals we had on the island. The portions are quite generous so if you order right its great value for money as well.
The only downside would be getting to and from. We hired a car so it was perfect and we never had any trouble but I think if you didn't have any transport it would slightly difficult to access as it is located away from the hustle and bustle.
The hotel is wonderfully private and quiet and it really feels like a sanctuary when you return from the crowds down in Chaweng. Can't recommend this place enough!!
Travel tip : Hire a car or a scooter - makes life much much easier.

Location (away from the hustle & bustle of Chaweng but still not too far it you wish to go into town for dinner or shopping.)
All day breakfast (we were at first disappointed that there wasn't the usual breakfast buffet, but we later found the breakfast menu to be just fine.)
Great price!
No Beach
Pool (location & size)
Staff
Spa
Small menu portions (we ordered the pad thai and fried rice for lunch and were still so hungry we had to order another club sandwich!)
Bathroom plumbing in our room not great (a weird smell started emanating after the second day).
The Kala is situated about 20mins from the busy streets of Chaweng beach, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We liked it for the intimacy (not too big), privacy (secluded location), and the scenery(beautiful views). Although there was no direct access to a beach, the infinity pool that overlooked the cliffwaters below proved to be a nice alternative. However, there were only 6 immediate poolside lounge chairs (six more on the lawn area behind) but good thing there weren't many people there so we had the entire pool to ourselves! But although it had a great view, the pool's location resulted in a shadow cast by the resort's main building, thus making "tanning" abit tricky! The other downside was that the staff wasn't readily available (or engaging enough) so we had to get up several times while laying out or in the pool to order drinks and food from the restaurant above.
However the staff overall was quite nice and helpful, even recommended a great spa in Chaweng north although we would have loved to try the onsite spa rather than venture into town, except we were told that they only had one spa staff hence would only be able to do one person at at time.
The Kala offers snorkeling and kayaking free of charge however the activities are all "unsupervised" so engage at your own risks!
Though a "boutique" hotel, the rooms were spacious enough, with a nice-sized tub.
Overall, we had a rather good stay at the Kala and I think a large part is due to the fact that there was low occuapancy during our stay so we had the "secluded privacy" that we were looking for in our vacation!
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Do not go to the Tamarind Springs Spa (it is a rip off!!) Do try instead, the Eranda Herbal Spa in Chaweng north.
There's a terrific local seafood restaurant about 5 min walking from the hotel (going towards Lamai direction) -- great traditional thai seafood (also cliffside view).

architecturally stunning.
the private jetties down to the sea and the rocks.
the polite and discreet service.
The food is not as good as it should be. Breakfast is great but the dinner menu is uninspired.
They say that the Kala is 'a place where time stands still' They totally deliver. I arrived there stressed out and tired and - i promise you - as soon as I stepped onto the property and saw how the ocean was framed in the high open entrance hall I knew my detox holiday had begun. The build quality of this hotel is superb. All the right elemental materials make it as luxuriously close to nature as you can get. My room was big and very private. The bed, very comfortable. The swimming pool and private decks are really, really peaceful - you can't help but switch off! As i said, the hotel really does over deliver on everything - except the Lunch and Dinner menu. Generally speaking the food on Koh Samui is awesome and the fact is the current Kala menu is uninspired, over priced and under portioned. I rethink is needed here.
Other than that, you really can not go wrong staying at the Kala.
I absolutely loved it and I will be back.
Just not for dinner.
Restaurant Tip : Dr Frogs - down the road by about a mile is a wonderful Italian dining experience.

Views, Spectacular, individualistic design and architichture, Exclusivity (only a limited amount of guests), amazing pool, character, Overall excellent 5* accomodation, the hotel offered a free transfer to the two local beaches
not on a beach location, however this was not a personal drawback,
Location was outwith Lamai, therfore there was no alternative choices for food and drink,
Food and drink slightly over priced, however the quality was above average
I stayed at the Kala for three nights over Christmas with my girlfriend as a break from travelling. The hotel is set on a cliff with fantastic views from all over the hotel which I feel is the main selling point for this hotel.
The hotel had a contemporary feel due to its design, however this did not mean it lacked in character.
I particulary liked the baths, sea views and the pool.
The food was slightly above average and overpriced for Thailand, however the romantic ambience made up for it.
Overall one of the most unique, best value for money and best hotels in Samui.
Hotel Feature Tip : The hotel have free activities such as Kayaking and Snorkling. They also have cooking lessons, which invole going to the market to buy ingredients before hand. This however is charged at 3000 baht per person...

No private beach. Nearby beach has really strong waves and not suitable for swimming.
This hotel is a nice boutique hotel. Nicely decorated but has many steps as it is located on a slope of a cliff. No private beach but only one rather small pool so it is great if you go during the low season so u get the pool to yourselves. Hotel staff is nice. Provide good service tho they stare at your while you eat. Breakfast selection very poor (bread, croissant, fruit, omlette and congee only)and over priced (US$25/person). $35/night for extra bed. Not really value for money. Would recommend for a short stay but not long stay. One would be bored there cos nothing much to do in the hotel.

Charming view from every corner of the hotel. Sea view from every room. Five-tier hotel layout. Infinity pool dreamlike in the evening. Beach deck on the rocks. Relaxing breakfast. Exclusive reading room.
Limited food menus. WiFi access poor in room.s Limited English and news channels in room television.
I have been to Samui numerous times since 1994 & Kala's location between Lamai & Chaweng had always been my favourite area of the island, simply due to the higher landscape offering breathtaking view over the Gulf and Chaweng. Kala was thus a fine surprise --- from the moment you enter the hotel to the reception lobby, the restaurant to the rooms, and the bar to the pools, the view alone is worth the stay. It's a stone throw away from the bustling Chaweng and Lamai, yet Kala is well tucked away for those who wants total serenity and privacy. Architecturally the hotel is interestingly laid out being separated into 5 levels on the cliff. Although the hotel doesn't have a beach, but the detailing of the wooden sea front deck around the rocks illustrated how thoughtful the builder had been. Take lots of pictures, as you will be surprise how artistic they'll turn out. Definitely 5 star environment at an affordable price.
Hotel Feature Tip : Due to the unique layout of the Hotel being 5 tiers built on the slope, Family with young kids will need to keep an eye on them, as certain areas of the hotel may pose dangers to kids who love to run around.

Stunning sea view, Excellent design concept
The Kala is a great little boutique hotel with million dollar views. This is not overated as the views from the lobby, from the rooms and from the pool will take your breath away. The overall design concept of the hotel revolves around coconut by-products (The Kala means the coconut shell) and this theme runs consistently throughout. The main materials used for the decoration of this resort are terrazzo, travertine stone, imported balinese lava stone, marble and sandstone. Exterior design look more like a balinese resort, but interior design reveals a very strong southern thai accent, in a chic, stylish way with the liberal use of coconut shells, coconut wood as decoration. (You'll find even coconut shampoo and bathfoam). Not to mention a coconut jam on toast for breakfast.
I really applaud the idea of all-day breakfast as you can order set-menu breakfast anytime you like throughout the day.
The hotel also have wooden paths leading down to the rocky headland below for great sea views. No beach access, so people who have beach as a priority should stay away. But for those who want a relaxing with stunning sea views and a place to bath in sunlight, this is the place for you. I'll give it a 9 for overall experience (Not the mention a very affordable rates offered by the hotel).
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Chaweng Noi Beach/Lamai Beach is a short taxi ride away.

Quiet, good staff willing to go extra mile, freedom to do your own thing.
Pace on most things are slow.
If you need something done quicker than usual, just let them know. There was one morning where we couldn't take the usual 45 min to an hour... they had us fed in 20-30 minutes, no problem. Their default pace is just a little more leisurely than most.
Other than that, fabulous time! Everything was as pictured and we stayed in their cheapest room.
Highly recommended for couples... would be less fun for a group of more party-centered people.
Restaurant Tip : Grilled fish with curry rice was the best dish on Kala's restaurant menu. Don't miss it!
We enjoyed several Samui restaurants like Eat Sense, Orchidea (do the tasting menu), and Rocky's. Skip "The Cliff" even though it is close to Kala -- it is by far the weirdest restaurant we've ever been to.
