Rustic but chilled out on a beautiful island
Stunning scenery, free kayaks, chilled out atmosphere
8.3
This place was one of the highlights of our Thailand trip.
It is a bit of a pain to get to due to the fact that Tigerline ferry doesn't seem to stop there anymore, you have to charter a longtail which can end up expensive, especially if you are travelling alone or just a couple of you. Once you arrive however, you cannot fail to be amazed at the stunning limestone islands rising steeply out of the sea, with transparent water and some good snorkelling.
The accommodation is rustic but great - tents have plenty of room for luggage, and even a lamp and a fan and electrical outlet inside. Mattresses were clean and comfortable. Shared cold-water bathrooms were clean, although when the gen set isn off and there are no lights the showers can be a bit too dark.
Food is canteen-style with bain maries laid out where you help yourself - there are BBQ prawns and fish in the evening and breakfast is pretty good - comparable to what you get in fancier and more expensive resorts, with fried rice, pancakes, cereal/yoghurt/milk, toast with jam, nutella, honey, fresh fruit, tea/coffee/milo.
The islands are beautiful and definitely worth the trip out there. If you are laid back and don't mind camping, sharing bathrooms and not getting to pick your food from a menu for a couple of days, and want a fairly quiet, relaxing and chilled out beautiful place, then this is a must for you (one or two people were complaining about sleeping in a tent, that there was no milk for coffee but just powdered creamer...jeez just relax guys!!) It isn'e exactly the cheapest place to stay but you are paying for the exceptional location and lack of tourist hordes, and once you factor in the free kayak/snorkel rental, rock climbing and all included meals it doesn't look too bad.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Take the free kayaks and paddle across to the beach on the neighbouring other island. The beach is beautiful and there is some great snorkelling over there, better than just off the beach where the tents are.

this is not for the traveler that likes to be spoiled. this is straight camping on a tropical island and is the first story we tell when explaing our month in thailand.
the snorkel trip that the island takes you on is not worth the money just use their gear and go out on the beach that is there
(it was amazingggggg).
try the rockclimbing (even though you will be sore the next day).
water monitor lizards walking around everywhere and you will have some potatoe bugs and occasional red ant in your tent.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Don't waste your money one the snorkel trip they offer its not that good.
The beach on lao lioang has wonderful snorkeling

Lao Liang Island is a beautiful spot and absolutely one of my favorites of the Trang islands.
It's very isolated, so it's great if you wanna experience a 'castaway' feeling. The accommodation is obviously quite primitive (since it's tents) and the food is very basic and a bit boring.
We spend two nights there, which I think was fine. Less would have been too short and for a longer time you would really start to need a shower!
The biggest down side is that it's a bit complicated to get there, since there are no public ferries. The 'resort' offer a shuttle service, which you can use if you travel alone. If you are two or more, I'd recommend to charter a long tail from Hat Yao for 2500 Baht per way. It's a much more scenic trip and you can arrive whenever you want. We had a bad experience because we had booked shuttle service with a morning departure. But because we had to wait for someone else, who arrived in Trang in the afternoon, we spend most of the day in Trang waiting. We arrived at the Island late afternoon. A private chartered long tail would only be a few 100 baht more, and then we would have had the whole day at the island.
