Ubon Ratchathani

Not to be confused with Udonthani, Ubon Ratchathani is the name of both the province and the city, located 600 kilometers from Bangkok and sharing a border with Lao and Cambodia. 'Ubon' for short, the city is sometimes referred to as the Emerald Triangle due to its dense forests.

One of the southernmost Isaan provinces, Ubon is rich in Isaan culture – a confluence of Thai, Laos and Cambodian cultures. The Thai spoken here is a dialect of Laos and food is typical fiery Isaan fare – sticky rice, som tam, larb and spicy curries. Being so close to the border and the Mekong, Ubon is a popular crossing for overland journeys. As one of Thailand's poorer and less developed provinces, it also provides respite from the bigger cities and gives travelers a more complete picture of rural life in Thailand.
