* Beautiful setting. * Within walking distance of Cat Ba Town. * Tranquil. * Good service and facilities.

* Perhaps expensive at $100 per night but hotels of this class in Vietnam do appear to be expensive.

The Sunrise Cat Ba resort in one of 3 resorts with their own private beaches on Cat Ba island. They are all situated in neighboring bays. The Sunrise Cat Ba resort is located in a very tranquil position - vehicles have to stop at the entrance some 50 yards away. There is only the sound of the waves. The hotel rooms are of good quality and all overlook the beach and some of the beautiful rocky outlets which spring up from halong Bay in the distance. There is one restaurant but if you tired of that you can walk the 10 minutes into Cat Ba Town and dine at numerous restaurants there. The Cat Ba water resort is in the next bay along, which you can also access by cliff side walkway. That would appear to cater more for families as it has a large water park on site.

Great location, a nice beach of its own, no other hotels nearby

No real cons. Just be aware that this is a place purely to relax - no nightlife to speak of.

It is a great place to relax, also with kids. We were a bit sad to leave after four days.

Gorgeous surroundings, staff is nice and helpful, went above and beyond. When I left the hotel to go back to Haiphong and our boat tickets at the reception they had it sent to me at the bus station.

A royal pain to get there, not much to do in the resort, food is expensive and OK (not great), 20 minutes walk to town, and the only other choice is motorcycle. No elevator, even to a fifth floor room.

Overall we had a wonderful time at Cat Ba and really can't complain about the staff either, but you should decide if this is for you. Be careful about how you travel to the hotel, because if you go from Hanoi unless you go all the way with a pre purchased combination (bus-boat-bus) ticket from Hoang Long bus company you are going to be ripped off and your trip may take anywhere from 6 hours to more then a day! At the end of your trip you are dropped off in the center of the city. Call for a hotel pickup. The hotel itself is OK. The top selling point is the drop dead gorgeous surroundings, and being close to Ha Long bay and the Cat Ba national park but resorts we found in south Vietnam offered much more and better quality service for the same price. We stayed on the 5th floor without an elevator (but we had a room with a gorgeous view). The beach is small but nice, the water is good, although -again- it's not as pleasant then the resorts visited in south Vietnam. There isn't too much to do in the hotel. Some of the staff speak very good English, but most really don't. You'll find mostly locals at this resort, and they can get noisy. Dinner is OK, not great, and for Vietnam it's definitely on the expensive side. If you want to get to the city to eat out or to see the night scene you either walk 20 minutes or sit on the back of a motorcycle. If you can live with the above, then I'd say it's more recommended then not.
