We spent two days in Hanoi and could see the main sightseeins because our hotel was only ten minutes walking from them. In the hotel we could rest in the very comfortable room.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The hotel is situated close to sigtseeing, but has a big advantage since is placed in the calm street.

The service is warm and friendly. The Staff went out of their way at all times to make our stay more comfortable. The Staff were very accommodation regarding minding our luggage between our mini trips to and from Hanoi. It was nice to have access the internet 24hrs a day for free as we were keeping contact with hotels and such for this vacation via the internet. It was a very central location for exploring the old quarter and surrounds. Rooms were neat and clean and maintained. Overall this hotel made our travels comfortable and the staff were warm, friendly and very accommodating!!

nicer in pictures than real life

It's clear that this hotel was renovated maybe 4 or 5 years ago, and the pictures online date from that time. It's now not so fresh: mold on the ceiling in some showers, cigarette smell permeating some rooms. Not terrible -- but a bit dingy.
We had originally booked a 4-night stay there, but cancelled after 2 nights to go elsewhere. We missed the very convenient location (very close to everything in Old Quarter), but were happy with the trade-off for room quality.
Beware especially: there are only 3 room layouts in the Gia Bao, as far as we can tell. Room A is quite big (a 'suite') with a window; I think people who end up with this layout are reasonably happy with their stay.
Room B is tiny. There's a queen size bed and barely enough room to maneuver around it to either side. It feels cramped. The showerhead holder was broken and so could not be adjusted; they told us not to worry about it. There is a window.
Room C is more spacious/comfortably sized, but has no window.
So if you book here, you have a 2 out of 3 chance of being stuck in a room with no window or no maneuvering space, regardless of what they call the rate you're paying.
The staff was nice and accommodating, and overall I'd say the place did the best they could with what they had -- but it was the least satisfactory hotel stay on our trip.

booked the vip room on the top floor, great spacious room and views of hanoi, hotel is right in the old quarter and a great location for exploring Hanoi, hotel staff are very helpful
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
tours booked from the hotel seemed expensive for vietnam, would shop around as there are many travel agents nearby

Comfortable stay - quite a good hotel. The girl at front desk was really helpful and the rooms were very clean and cleaned well daily. Breakfast was quite nice too. close to shopping in the old quarter.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Leave the old quarter and go exploring in the rest of hanoi. we didn't have much time but would have liked to have seen more outside of the old quarter

booked the best room, president suite, for a romantic getaway. room was nice and big, bed big and comfortable. booked it for the bath tub. it was big made for two, but really poorly designed. the shower head/hose was up on the wall next to the bath tub, so had to take it off and pull it into the bath tub and stand in it and try to shower. vietnamese still are not sure how to design a bathroom, especially the shower and bathtub. otherwise, great value for our money! breakfast buffet was by far the smallest and the least appealing out of the many hotels i have stayed at in hanoi. but would stay there again because of how cheap it was and it location next to the kiem lake.

Gia Bao Grand Hotel is in a perfect location just 2 minutes walk to the beautiful Hoam Kien lake- the heart of Hanoi. Enjoy evening walks in the cool air and early morning exercise with the locals. The Old Town with its many restaurants, coffee shops, markets and shopping is 5 mins away.
The hotel has the friendliest staff you could imagine and so very helpful and eager to make your stay perfect. This is a wonderful hotel in every way.
Restaurant Tip:
Skip the tourist restaurants and walk 5 mins to " The Little Hanoi" restaurant, 23 Hang Gai Street. The best Pho Bo !
