receptionist really pushy to book a tour to halong bay. Badly organised. Rude staff. Some very small rooms.
The older rooms are far more spacious and are quite nice. Unfortunately, the electricity and water needs updating. There isn't a lift in the old part of the building so if you get a top room there's quite a lot of stairs to go up. If you book go for the superior rooms and hope nothing explodes! Don't get them to book you a taxi to the airport as they over charge you. Better to just pick one up from the street. During breakfast, one of the guests gave one of the receptionists a tattoo! They moved us within 2 hours of us arriving. When we refused they forced us to move by turning off the water. Second room's electricity socket blew up and we had to move just as we were getting into bed. Third room was very small. The bathroom was so small you couldn't sit on the loo properly. Staff useless and not helpful. Breakfast poor except for the omlettes.

Location, in room computer and internet, helpful staff, good rooms/facilities
Arrangement for hotel accommodation in sapa, Vietnam - mistakes made. Caused problems in sapa - hotel shuttle in sapa took to wrong hotel, caused inconvenience and problems in sapa after overnight train and bus journey from hanoi. Taken to more expensive hotel in sapa - not happy - did not stay in more expensive hotel in sapa moved to original plan hotel.
Hotel good, make other travel arrangements elsewhere.
Restaurant Tip : LE PLACE restaurant approximately 50 metres from hotel is good.

Room smelled of mothballs, staff were very pushy with tours
The welcome here was friendly - but immediately turned to sales. Didn't we want to book Halong Bay? Sapa? We had researched various companies and thought we could get a mid-range Halong Bay tour for a better price (we did, from Vega Tours)and we weren't ready to book Sapa yet (having just arrived very tired after a long travel day). Staff were friendly but way too pushy.
Our room was interesting - small, but it had a sort of garden outside the full length window. Nice too look at but it didn't close which allowed mosquitos to enter the room. The worst was the smell though - it was like an old closet full of mothballs. Overall, we were disappointed.
ps- we've been touring Asia for 3 months so we have reasonable expectations(ie weren't expecting the Ritz).
The location was good though.

very big spacious rooms (superior) with double beds each and our very own personal computer.
Reception is trying to sell us expensive tickets for Halong Bay 2D1N stay.
Generally Hanoi is an urban city with nothing much there to do. Their water puppet show is interesting enough but beware!! it's all in Vietnamese so unless u have read the brochure beforehand, you wont be able to understand the show.
Halong bay is exceptionally BEAUTIFUL.. enjoyed my 2D1N stay on a junkboat!.. pls do tt tour. v good. Hotel is selling us the tickets at USD79 per person but go to Sinh Cafe Travel agency (its everywhere in the streets, every corner). their package to us is at USD45 which we bargained down to USD40 but it can go down all the way to USD30.
Staying at Junkboat or Cat pa Island is the same price so staying at junkboat is a world of experience. v v quiet as compared to Hanoi, peaceful without all the honking in the city and the waters are v calm, no rocking waters or waves at all. Mix ard with other tourists from the junk and its such an experience to interact w different nationalities and....... definitely go for a swim in Halong Bay. Just jump off the junkboat in the waters and experience swimming at Halong Bay, one of the wonders of the world..
Shopping Tip : lots of boutique shops nearby.. interesting & colourful.

Great location, great room and very experience staffs.
One of the best hotel I've ever stayed in. A great place in the heart of the historic district. Everything worth seeing is within walking distance. Very friendly staffs ,they were also helpful and trustworthy. They really went out of their way to help all guests. And very good quality rooms ,facilities are excellent . Breakfast is good, and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I will definitely stay there again if coming back.
Restaurant Tip : "Ngon restaurant" is realy delicious.

Clean, good location, value for money with good breakfast. Since I don't carry laptop, I like it that each room is equipped with PC with free internet access.
Reasonably priced, room with good size and clean, excellent location with short 7 min walk to the Hoan Kiem Lake. Staff (Mr Ha and Giang) provide excellent service and extremely helpful and accommodating to special requests to ease our travel experience.

Very friendly staff and nice reception area. Water pressure is good and hot water is always available, shower is very powerful. The tours they offer via South Pacific Travel are good. Rooms are fine for the price band.
Bathrooms are very small, no shower curtain therefore water goes everywhere. Drain smelling, but only slightly. There are no lifts. Breakfast was very limited. I’m sure most of the hotels are the same in this area.
On the basis of price and location, this is a good hotel. I was a bit disappointed at first on getting the room on the top floor with no lift provision but then realised that all the buildings in the old quarter are narrow. Vietnam's tourist and service industry is in its infancy, they are a bit rough around the edges but I am sure they will get there, so don't expect the same service levels and facilities as Thailand. The hotel staff will bend over backwards to help you, that's all very well but they need to concentrate on the basics i.e. sorting the smelling drains, provide shower curtain/screen, better selection of breakfast, no hard sell of their tours, switch on the lights in the stairwell, safe in all rooms and take all unnecessary furniture out of rooms. It’s still good value.
Travel tip : Try the restaurants without loads of western tourists. Go on be different. If you don’t want to use the Hotel’s tour service, say that you have already booked with ODC or Sinh café . The hard selling is persistent and relentless.

The room was amazing and the staff were very helpful. Perfect location.
too many motorbikes, it was too difficult to cross the street.
The location of the hotel was very conveniently situated for shopping and main attractions. As quiet as can reasonably be expected in Hanoi old quarter.
The atmosphere of the room and of the common facility areas was great. the facilities available in the rooms i.e. computer ,Free internet, bath-tub and china etc. a modern spacious room. choice at breakfast was excellent
The staff were the most pleasant , polite, friendly and helpful.
Complaints I read about the room, staffs… were not borne out by my experience .Every thing was perfect.
Restaurant Tip : Moca cafe in Nha tho street is very nice. just 3minute walking from hotel.

The condition and breakfast is good.
Credit of this hotel is bad.
First night, the manager of this hotel told me that they have no room for me, because their water pipe is broken. But I saw many other guest still live in their room. Until second night, can I live in their hotel.

The room is spacious and quite value for money considering the price we paid. The interior of the room is nicely done up and cosy. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Hotel is located away from the main roads in an alley so traffic noise is reduced. Lots of nice eating places and cafes in the area.
Could introduce more varieties in the breakfast. Install shower curtains in the bathrooms to prevent water from splashing onto the bathroom floor.
Restaurant Tip : Go try the Mediterrano at Church Street, just 5 min walk from the hotel. The entire street is laced with cosy little bistros and cafes and dining there takes you back in time to the colonial days of Hanoi. The buildings are charming and the view of the Church at night is beautiful. Food is reasonably priced and good.

I really can't find a single one.
Not even close to clean.
Noisy.
Unfriendly staff.
It was a difficult task to select a medium priced hotel in Hanoi because no one seem to transmit confidence, and staying at Indochina, I understood why.
Staff was unfriendly from the very beginning. We had no specific conflict, but I never felt I was welcome in tehir house.
We had a 'deluxe' room, which meant we had a window to the street. But according to the street noise from 5 AM, I'm not sure that's a real bennefit. Room was really small. Bathroom was even smaller (in relative terms). I'm not a very tall guy (1'80 m) and sitting in the toilet I couldn't find a way not to smash my knees against the wall in front of me. Bed clothes and towels were anything but clean. Paper-thin walls provided a very interesting range of noises during the night. Room smell was disgusting.
Hotel facilities were far from clean. Specially at the elevator in which I'd avoid to climb not to have to smell it for the 4 floors I had to go up-down.
I can't honestly tell about breakfast. After such a wonderful night, the last thing I could do in that place was to eat.
Nightlife Tip : Beware of the night in the surroundings.
Around 10PM the streets are crowded and give a feeling of safety that make you feel confident and forget all warnings you've heard of, but after 11PM everyone dissapears and walking to the hotel is a high risk adventure.
We thought the reception guy was joking when he asked us at what time we planned to return 'so that I know when I have to worry and call the police', but we had a real bad time to walk back at 11.30 PM the 4 blocks we had gone to look for an internet cafe.
