We stayed for two nights at the end of our tour of North/Central Vietnam. We had already stayed in a number of very comfortable, reasonably priced hotels during our holiday and this was a special treat before going home. Whilst it is a very beautiful hotel, our room in the modern Opera Wing was rather small and the bathroom was a little outdated. The food and service were excellent. Overall, I am not sure that it was worth the huge leap in price for two rooms for two nights

Beautiful historic hotel in great location

This historic hotel is located in the French quarters of Hanoi, a short distance from old Hanoi and many other attraction one wishes to see. The hotel has two wings: the new wing built in the 1990's and the old wing built in the early 1900's. in the old wing, there are two types of rooms: the opera room on the 3rd floor which was added on in the 1960's and the Metropole rooms which are the original ones. While the old wing is more expensive, I highly recommend spending the extra money and staying there.
The restaurants are all excellent . We had a very good dinner at Angelina the Italian place. The breakfast buffet is fantastic with tons of choices and some of the best mango I have had in Southeast Asia.
The service is excellent across the board. I recommend using the concierge to get tickets for the Water Puppets or any other event in Hanoi.
Make sure to take the hotel's free historic tour including the bomb shelter.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The Water Puppets are a must. They give an insight into Vietnamese culture and are wonderful to see. There is a screen with explanations in English and the live music is fun. A good show for kids too.

Good location and nice rooms with a very comfortable bed

Very nice hotel as it should be for a 5 star and not cheap. Big rooms but miss a balcony, a bit noicy if you have a room facing the street so try get a room with a pool view. The breakfast was not the best for the price.

Lovely hotel and the service is great

Sofitel did not disappoint me as per their photos in agoda. What you see is what you get. The design interior is very classy and elegant. The service is not snooty but is very friendly and helpful. We forgot a painting in our room. We called the hotel and asked if they could send it in the airport as we were there already on our way back home. They did not hesitate to send somebody quickly. We were happy that we stayed with them. We were taken good cared of.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
Halong bay is soooo beautiful. Do not forget to include it in your itinerary if you happen to be in Saigon.

Fabulous stay in all regards. The hotel is beautiful, the staff and service fabulous. It is truly a trip back to French colonial Vietnam. No complaints at all. Swimming in the pool or a drink at the bamboo bar are highly recommended.

This was our 5 star treat in our budget holiday, and it was worth the extra. The hotel has an amazing ambience and service ethic. Just before we arrived they had discovered the bomb shelter from the 70's and have incorporated this into their history trail.
Our only negative was that there were renovations happening to the pool area so it was noisy during the day.
