Stayed here for four different nights, in three different rooms: a standard which was small but had all the amenities for 40 per night and two diffferent suites which were 60 a night. One thing I didn't like was the tub in my standard had problems with drainage, also the suites while very big considering the price were not uniform in layout. One had a huge window with no balcony the other had a balcony, one had a shower/tub combination, the other just a shower. Besides this I really enjoyed the hotel as the staff were incredibly friendly and would also offer you a drink whenever you sat down in the lobby area. For the money and the service I think this is one of the better midrange hotels in Hanoi and I would stay here again.
Very friendly staff.
Some rooms need a little improvement.

We had a pleasant stay in Viet hotel in Hanoi. The staff was very friendly. They arranged our taxis after we found out that a lot of metered taxis have very fast counting meters! We've booked a nice trip to Halong via the booking desk in the hotel lobby at a very reasonable price. We had a room at the centre of the building with a 'window' which opened into an air-funnel. After all this was a big advantage, as we were away from all the street noise. The rooms at the 6th floor can be a bit noisy as the staff starts early in the morning with the preparations for breakfast, laughing and shouting. The hotel restaurant is a bit dull, as is there menu, although I had the best fresh springrolls I had for a long time.
I would recommend this hotel. Beware of copy cats.
Friendly staff, location.
Preparation of breakfast starts early!
Avoid the coach parties

Do not accept a room next to the lift / breakfast room / bar, or you will be woken very early. Location- not in heart of old quarter, a good 30 minutes trek through dangerous traffic. No nearby restaurants.
- Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Near a good night market. The whole length of the street down to the lake.
Great Stay!

As for booking tours for the Ha Long Bay, I think it is good to book the nicer tours ($60-80 range for overnight) at this hotel, but if you want a budget trip, go outside to one one of the many agencies on the streets in the old district of Ha Noi.
