Lovely historic hotel

Location ( near The Bund). The history of the establishment, the bell boys
We enjoyed our stay at the Astor House Hotel and would be happy to stay again. We loved its history. The hotel does need some upgrading and we were happy to see workman upgrading the lovely stair case from Level 1 to Level 3. The reception staff need to learn a little more English.

Good location, historic hotel

Atmosphere, room and views
Nice hotel, very historic. Great location at the end of the Bund but a bit far from the subway. Wifi & business centre poor.

good location & price

location history price
The Astor house trades on its past - it was one of the first western hotels in the city and has that 19th century feel to the place - all dark wood and very large rooms with very high ceilings. Plenty of old photo's and other memorabilia around. So if you want a bit of nostalgia this is the place for you. Location is fine right beside the bridge over the Suzhou Creek and a short walk to the Waitan. Metro stop 10 minutes walk away.

Old World Elegance, Modern Comfort

history - nearness to bund - helpful staff
Staying at the Astor House is an experience itself. With such former guests as President Grant, Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein, it's really full of history (I stayed a couple doors down from Scott Joplin's room). The 1st~3rd floor rooms have very interesting placards and photos of the hotel's glory days. The Peacock Room is a very pleasant place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and Richard's Bar is a relaxing refuge for a nicely made martini after a day of walking around Shanghai. Like any grand old hotel, it can't match modern properties in absolute terms of creature comfort, but the rooms are very clean, warm (I went in winter), comfortable. Just minutes from the Bund, and not such a big walk to People's Park/Shanghai Museum. Staff members are helpful and quick to supply necessities like elec. converters. Some nearby pubs if you need a late meal, and room service is reasonable. The ambience of the whole place can make you feel like you're back in the 1930s. For all this, their rates are very reasonable for central Shanghai.
