Soviet dormitory style

Walking distance to Kremlin though hard to find initially
I wouldn't call this a hotel. It is a soviet style obschezhitie, i.e. dormitory. The plus is this almost quaint local boarding tradition--I would say all guests are local Russians. The minus is also that it's so soviet, i.e. no amenities, surprised to see a foreign passport, etc. It's communal shower and toilet. Very basic room, though it did have a working refrigerator and its own in-room sink. TV did not work. Plugs located in inconvenient places. Service is also soviet style, but I wouldn't complain about it since I know that culture, and have no expectations. If you don't speak Russian, you will have a very hard time. Otherwise, budget accommodation in the heart of the city.

Best location to ruble ratio

Just a short walk to Red Square, but away from the tourists
This time I was traveling for pleasure so my budget was constrained. Moscow is an expensive place, and a hotel is a good way to cut down expenses. Baikal Hotel is right on the Moscow river and a 20 minute walk to Red Square. The first part of the walk requires navigating a bridge and a busy street. Fortunately traffic in Moscow is rather congested so you can cross rather easily. The shared shower and toilet wasn't a problem. The hotel rooms are warm and have a big double window for looking at trees through.
