Nice Staff, Bad Wifi

Location, Staff
Staff was nice in person, but difficult to deal with when you call up for inquiries because they tend to cut you off with a quick response when you haven't finished your question yet (this happened repeatedly); as if they are happy and enthusiastic to help by talking, but without first listening. When you get to the hotel, however, they are very pleasant. Wifi was awful (despite having many different choices of routers you can connect to). Frequent disconnection and super slow (like 25 kbps... that's a "k" not an "M"). I don't think it's a Malaysian/Penang problem because Wifi was much better at another Penang hotel I stayed at last year (Hotel Mingood). But I'd like to say that Banana Boutique's rooms were much nicer than Mingood. Also great location and near the bus stop which takes you to great places around Penang. Do I recommend it? Yes, as long as you take these measures: 1) When inquiring with the staff over the phone, you have to be very assertive (almost rude) and insist "Excuse me, can you please listen and let me finish before answering?" 2) Buy your own mobile internet from the DIGI counter at the airport before going into town. The mobile internet is much, much, much.. and again much faster than Banana Boutique's Wifi (and then you can use your phone to emit a Wifi signal, if you have a laptop). With these measures in place, I can say that Banana Boutique hotel is a good place to stay in Penang.

Thai - visum hotel

This hotel is specialised to organise Thai visum
This hotel is old. During the night, the bed shakes because people walk outside on the wooden floor.

Banana boutique hotel

Walking distance to everywhere. Room is clean and breakfast served is sufficient.
Pleasant. No fuss. However parking can be a bit tricky if you are driving. Limited space at the back of the hotel.

Overrated 4-star hotel

location, decoration and spacious room
Parking is extremely limited, no wardrobe to hang your clothes. Worst is there was a power outage in the morning. Although the whole area was affected, but the hotel should have backup generator, I could not take a hot shower just because of the power outage.

Very good value for money

Attractive public areas inside. Comfortable room. Efficient Thai visa service
This place could be four star if the outside area was as attractive as the inside. But its not. It looks like it was converted from someone's garage. Staff are friendly but a bit dippy. A manager told me there is high turnover which would explain why reception seem to struggle.

Not a very good stay

location, ambiance and customer service of the boss/front desk lady
This was our second time in the hotel. This time we came with 2 small children and booked the family room which was located upstairs. There were 7 of us including our children. The room floor was dusty when we checked in. The hangers were not enough (there was only one) and the water pressure was disappointing. The sink tap's water flow was so so small that we had to use the shower head. One of our rooms experienced a faulty toilet whereby we had to move to a room downstairs and no refund of the balance of the room was given for the first night (we stayed for 2 nights) although the difference was abour RM30- RM40. We didn't pursue it further as our elderly parents found it hard to climb the stairs all the way up to the upper floor where our original rooms were assigned. The breakfast selection was exactly the same as it was when we first check in almost 3 years ago. I would think that they could consider serving a different kind of menu with other variety of foods. Overall, I'd give the hotel a 3.5 star rating. Aside from the comments above, I think this is a good hotel to stay considering its location. The ambiance is truly nostalgic and historical, which is something I like very much. I think the hotel would be more suited for singles or backpackers but not really for families with small children and elderly people unless the family rooms are on the ground floor.

Not at all what i expected from a 4 star rating

Staff very polite and helpful. Visa service offered is good. The shower was ok i suppose
Did not really enjoy this hotel. It seems set up just for customers who stay 24 hours to get a visa. That's part was great. The visa service is fast and easy plus they got me a visa i didn't think I qualified for. Great. However. The hotel is not a 4 star. If you like slow Wi-Fi. Grubby bed sheets. Old rooms and dodgy ladyboy massage service on the street out side. Then this hotel is for you! If you just want a visa and are staying 24 hours it's bearable. I guess.
