great if you like remote

remote, quiet, peaceful
First off, the cons. Don't believe the add on agoda, the place doesn't offer a pool, or a beach, or water sports. The staff doesn't speak English much, they must have ticked all available boxes. And agoda advertises the twin room at 60 us dollars, 10 more than what you pay on location. The staff barely speaks English, and the 2 girls there are nice, but they need their combined English skills to speak as 1 decent English speaker. Don't count on getting information on tours there. And phone signal is inexistant, so you need to get to town for information. The free shuttle is great, but the schedule is a little rigid. The pros. Great location to get out of the noise. Bugs, pets, my kids loved it, running around and being able to get a little crazier than usual. There is a pet turtle, they could go and look for frogs... We thought the food was a little over priced, then realized they were Cat Ba prices, 50k for fried rice or noodles. You'll pay the same in town. The free cooking class was nice, yummy spring rolls and a free dinner and vodka shots with a friendly cook that doesn't speak English. There must be great treks to be done in the mountains, the scenery is gorgeous, but it rained the whole time we were there. All in all, we will definitely go back to the Eco-Lodge when we go back to Cat Ba.

VERY Remote and Mostly peaceful

Location and View
If you want remote, you will love this. I spent my days reading a book in a hammock, watching rain storms, and exploring the countryside. The food was pretty good (the higher prices make sense because they have to travel an hour into the city to get supplies). The room was nice, but the walls are thin. There are dogs on site and one of them will growl, snap, and try to bite you. I work with animals so I kept it at bay, but if you have a fear of dogs. Do not come. Honestly, that dog should not be at a public hotel. Also, I don't suggest swimming anywhere they suggest. The beaches around Cat Ba are so polluted and disgusting, you will NOT want to go into them. I avoided excursions because I wanted to be alone and to relax, so I cannot speak to those. The manager is high strung and rude, but will do almost anything you ask.

Extremely disappointed

Quiet, ok cable TV, good information for hiking
I was highly disappointed. Room quality was fantastic, but the location was horrendous. Not only was the hotel located 10 km outside town through a grotesque, saddening stretch of highway under construction, the hotel itself was basically located on the construction site of a reservoir, severely detracting from the supposed "eco, lodge" beauty. Motor bikes were $10 for the day, almost double what I've paid in every other place in SEA. Breakfast was ok, no buffet, not even a beverage bar. As everywhere in Vietnam, the service was ok. No wifi in rooms. Overall, extremely disappointing, especially for the price.

Very remotely located and food below standard.

Quite Good trips arranged by the staff
A disappointment as most of what they write on their homepage wasn't true. They beach was a hours walk the hotel and not one that you would like to swim in, bikes weren't free. As the hotel is very remotely situated and there is only one shuttle bus a day, you are more or less forces to spend your evenings at the hotel, which means that you will also have to eat at the hotels restaurant, which is the both more expensive and less tasteful compared to what we have come to expect after traveling several weeks in Vietnam. I'm sorry to say but I would not recommend this hotel to others. One of the positive side: the manager was very friendly and helpful.

Quiet Environment

Located away from towns or cities. Great air quality. Helpful staff.
We enjoyed three peaceful nights in this idyllic setting. Mngr Vinh will go to great lengths to help you find whatever activities you need to make your stay comfortable and pleasant. Vinh's English is quite good and his attitude about his role and job are first rate. The facility itself is clean and very well set up. Rooms are spacious and airy. Some slight difficulties in transport back and forth to Cat Ba town or the ferry wharf's, but given some notice Vinh can accomplish almost anything. We would definitely stay at this property when we return to Cat Ba Island.

Very good value for money and a unique tranquility

service, food, halong bay boat and kayak tour
3 great relaxing days in total tranquility of a distinctly remote but wonderful location close to the national park, very friendly and supportive local manager, good organization of the boat trip which I strictly recommend to everyone in the region
