Central Business District

Adelaide’s city center is laid out on a tidy grid and hemmed in by parks and gardens on every side. The whole of the central business district measures one square mile, so getting around on foot is easy.

The focal point is Victoria Square, with a statue of the Queen at its center. The memorial was actually built in honor of a visit by Queen Elizabeth in 1963. Immediately north is a fountain and a station where the Glenelg tram picks up passengers and takes them to the seaside town of Glenelg. A few hotels in the city center enjoy views of Victoria Square, but most are further to the north.

The northernmost limit of the CBD is North Terrace, and this is where tourists and visitors find Adelaide’s best attractions and activities. The defining site of North Terrace is Parliament House, which is open for guided tours at midday. East on North Terrace is Ayers House, a beautifully preserved colonial mansion. The house is a short stroll from Runde and Rymill parks.

As most hotels in the city center are planted on or near North Terrace, this has also become the best place for shopping and dining. Rundle Mall is closed to traffic and boasts boutiques, street entertainers and a lively pub scene. But the most inviting place to shop may be Central Market, which is further south along Gouger Street. It receives 600,000 shoppers every month.
