Edge of town, slightly-worn lux hotel w trappings

Room size, cleanliness and comfort, Helpful staff once language barrier overcome, Fantastic variety Chinese breakfast - delicious
7.3
Worn out hugh 4-star-like, still has all the comfort but they're slightly threadbare on edges, helpful courteous staff after a fashion (think they saw me as a novelty strange foreign person, and I was laughed at outright!). On edge of 'freeway', good 15 minutes walk to town but only 15 mins to get to the replica temples for the minority chiefs. There was a business room where you could use a PC and get on the internet, but there was no wifi. However, the room was large, spotless and very comfortable with a good writing desk and I was able to sit and catch up on my trip log/diary, very warm, undisturbed. Perfect rest day. Also, I like the breakfast - which was fully Chinese and had many dishes to choose from and taste. Was a little derelict, understandably, in winter (-15) and apart from some conference group, I think I might have been the sole guest which added a slightly bizarre edge to the trip. Also, there was something strange going on with there being two buidlings: one had the reception but was completely abandoned when I was dropped there by a dodgy aggressive taxi driver quite late - that was unnerving (the place is very big and being on the edge of a 'freeway', fairly isolated) and for a brief moment I felt in real danger; the other building had a 'manned-reception' was where the guests (and staff!) were; both buildings were very big.

Good location but bad experience

Good location (just 15 minutes walk away from the Mountain Villa Summer Palace)
4.7
Although ideally located just 15 minutes away from the famous Mountain Villa Summer Palace (避暑山庄), the hotal left me with a bad impression in terms of service, facilities and dining. The hotel lobby is spacious and nicely decorated. But that's where the good things end. Concierge and Reception staff are somewhat cold and unwilling. The lobby looks lifeless with all it's lights off (in a bid to save on electrial bills?). This also applies to ALL the corridors of the guest rooms! Therefore it was dimly-lit everywhere. I almost fell after tripping over a vacuum-cleaner cable! The air-conditioner in the room was set to only "heater" mode and thus it was really warm and stuffy in the room. When asked, the staff just advised us to open the windows and switch the air-con off. The rooms also do not come with facial tissues and we were advised to use toilet rolls to wipe our faces in! My room came with breakfast provided, and thus we were relieved we do not have to dine out in the cold weather. However, the standard of the food during breakfast wasn't appetizing to us! The only saving grace for the hotel is it's relative close vicinity to the Mountain Villa Summer Palace - the main attraction of ChengDe. Other than that, it is advisable to select another hotel for comfort and a better experience.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: Take a public taxi to anywhere you like to visit. DO NOT engage any freelance tour guides who promises to "bring you anywhere you like to go". They claim to be cheaper than taking a taxi BUT they bring you to places NOT in your itinerary, which charges ridiculous prices for entrance, and even "forces" and "con" you into buying joss-sticks in temples, useless stones from some gravels etc.

Room was quite run down

Quite place
3.7
I was very hopeful that the hotel has a nice garden as what was stated but unfortunately it was not. Room was quite run down. First room I was in the aircon was not working so they changed me to another room which it was very "dirty" and ceiling was moldy. Expected more for the price I paid in China.
