Chiang Mai Plaza was once a beautiful hotel. The setting, foyer, walkway to the lifts for the Deluxe rooms, are all impressive. However, it now is badly in need of major restoration. It is looking tired. On booking, we settled on a Superior room, thinking that it would be adequate for 4 nights. However, we later learned that these rooms are chiefly used for Chinese tour groups. So we upgraded to a Deluxe room. However, reservations at the hotel ignored the upgrade, & gave us the most dreadful room - Superior. The only way I can describe it is to say that it should be condemned. Of course, we complained; & were moved to a Deluxe room. 100% better, but still below superior quality of other hotels we've stayed at. We recommend your (unannounced) inspection of the hotel, particularly the superior rooms.

hotel is an 8
Location, cleanliness, staff, facilities= excellent. Walk due West from the hotel for 5km, turn North walking 4km, turn East walking 5km, turn South walking 4km. You have now completed a "square" (circle) around the main area hub of Chaing Mai. Inside these boundaries, explore small streets. Be sure and watch for the pub, Thai One On. Believe is Soi 3. Ask someone. I've been here too many times to remembe the Soi number for sure. Great food, good price, Excellent Staff and friendly crowd. Sports, too. Rent a motorbike and head West to Chaing Mai University. Explore the small streets which spur off the South Boundary (Doi Sutep road) of the College. Also, the grounds of the College are peaceful. AND, follow the road leading due West on Doi Sutep. Elevation will rise somewhat. NICE lake up here.
