Top areas in Batam Island
This tiny Indonesian island just 25 kilometers from Singapore is a bustling center of tourism and industry. Due to its proximity to Singapore, Batam Island is a popular destination for Singaporeans looking for a weekend escape and for travelers on their way to Sumatra or Malaysia’s Johor Bahru. Batam Island accommodation comes in all forms, but large full-service resorts are the most popular, with many enjoying absolute waterfront positioning.
Batam Island’s biggest draw card is its beaches and water sports take place on practically every stretch of sand. Some of the best beaches can be found on the Barelang Islands, connected to Bantam via a network of bridges. One of these islands – Galang – is famous for being a Vietnamese refugee camp following the Vietnam War. Today Galang is a popular tourist attraction and visitors can cycle around the camp and pay respect to memorials and photographs of past refugees.
Dining on Batam Island is centered around fresh seafood, the evening waterfront markets in particular making a memorable meal. Of course all of the resorts of Bantam Island offer a great variety of dining options and the nicer establishments have extensive wine menus. Batam Island is a duty free zone which makes imported beers and wine very affordable.
