Bogota

The Colombian capital is a vibrant city that offers an exciting blend of late-night entertainment, wonderful colonial architecture and superb food. Bogota International Airport is a busy international hub and is not far from the city. Most high-end Bogota city center hotels provide pick-up services from Bogota Airport though taxis and buses are frequent and inexpensive.

Visitors to Bogota will be immediately struck by the cosmopolitan lifestyle enjoyed by the residents. The city is a contradiction of old and new, with centuries-old plazas and cobblestone streets alongside towering skyscrapers and modern shopping malls. The city lies in the mountains of the Andino region at an altitude of 2600 meters. This makes for cool evenings and mild daytime temperatures.

La Candelaria is the old town of Bogota, and it’s this neighborhood that shows Bogota at its most charming. The colonial buildings have been very well restored, and many Bogota hotels are housed within classic Spanish mansions built at the peak of the Spanish empire. The bars, cafes, and restaurants found here are equally as charming, offering a very high standard of international cuisine.

One must-see Bogota attraction outside La Candelaria district is the summit of Monserrate which offers panoramic views of the city. The stone staircase to the top is a marvel of colonial engineering. Although there is a funicular railway to the top, hiking the stone-cut path with the locals is highly recommended. Throughout Bogota there are many fine museums, and the Museo Nacional is one of the oldest on the continent, with fantastic exhibits of over 20,000 pieces from the past 2000 years of history.
