  1. More about Brussels

Brussels

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and in many ways the capital of Europe. This compact city with its beautiful architecture and sophisticated, multi-lingual residents is the home of the European Union. For visitors arriving by air, Brussels International Airport offers good connections across Europe, but many choose to visit the city via high-speed rail – the journey from London to Brussels taking under two hours on the Eurostar. Most visitors choose accommodation in the heart of Brussels, though it's worth noting that accommodation in the outlying suburbs is both plentiful and reasonably priced. The Sint Joost ten Node area also has a varied selection of hotels and boasts excellent access to the North Train Station.

For sightseers and culture buffs, it can be difficult to know where to start with Brussels. A good bet is the immense Grand Place-Grote Market in the heart of town, a medieval square where many of the city's public events are staged. The Grand Place is the main tourist attraction of Brussels, housing the impressive Gothic Town Hall and the Breadhouse, making it a great place to soak up the atmosphere of the city.

Other major Brussels attractions include the Mannekin Pis (a cheeky bronze statue of a boy), the silver sci-fi-style Atomium building and the Royal Palace of Brussels. On a gastronomic note, Brussels is also well endowed. Waffles, chocolate, French Fries and beer are all produced locally and famous as Belgian exports, with lesser-known regional dishes like mussels and mashed potatoes other featured specialties.

For those with a taste for arts and culture, the city offers many famous museums and galleries, including the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire and the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Both of these museums house art and artifacts from around the world and multiple days are needed to truly explore their treasures.
