Chandigarh

Chandigarh is one of India’s most impressive cities. Located in the northern part of the country, it serves as capital to both Haryana and Punjab. However, it belongs to neither and is considered a union territory administered directly by the central government. Chandigarh was the first planned city in India post-independence in 1947. The beautiful design, wide streets, and captivating landscape all entice travelers looking to experience India in a less congested environment.

The sights of Chandigarh are set against an expanse of blue sky and the Shivalik Hills. As is the case with most cities, taking a stroll or cycling to feel the environment and catch the life of everyday locals is a great way to go. For reaching specific destinations, rickshaws and taxis provide convenient means of transport. Top attractions that would be considered a must include Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake. Chandigarh is also home to Asia’s largest rose garden, and a few kilometers outside the town is Asia’s largest succulent botanical garden, Cactus Garden. Guided bicycle tours can be arranged with guides leading travelers on a journey through the city via dedicated bike paths. The government buildings found here – such as The Capitol, The High Court, and the Secretariat – are very impressive and worth a stop, even if you are planning to view it from the outside. Getting inside isn’t impossible, but can take quite a bit of time and paperwork to get the permission. However, the time spent could be well worth it with each site offering photogenic interiors.
