Con Dao Islands

An archipelago comprised of 16 islands off the coast of Vietnam, Con Dao Islands is a destination of immense natural beauty coupled with a dark past that is remembered in the prisons and cemetery that scatter the islands. The area is also considered a national park. The historical relevance of the islands draw many domestic travelers, and more and more foreign tourists are finding their way here to take in the island’s story against the backdrop of exotic wilderness. The islands are served by Co Ong Airport.

Being a collection of islands, water sports and relaxing on the beach are quite popular activities for travelers here. An Hai Beach and Lo Voi Beach are the town beaches, and a few accommodation options can be found near the former. Catching the sea turtle nesting period between June and September can add a unique experience to visiting the islands. On the more solemn side of the island are the 11 prisons, some built during the French-colonial period and others built by Americans during the war. Today, these tiger cages and prisons serve as museums and historical reminders of Vietnam’s darker periods. The many thousands who died here were buried in Hang Duong Cemetery. Many Vietnamese take pilgrimages here, and some make a midnight stop at the tomb of national heroine Vo Thi Sau to pray and make offerings.

The vast majority of accommodation in the Con Dao Islands can be found in the town located on Con Son, the largest island of the archipelago. A small selection can be found away from the town and nearer the beaches.
