Discover the neighborhoods of Crete Island
A jewel of the Mediterranean, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and an increasingly popular tourist destination. The island offers more than the typical sea, sand, and sun as there are ruins of ancient civilization sprinkled around the modern, lively cities. The largest of these cities is the capital of the island, Heraklion. Here, visitors will disembark at the airport or ferry port, and renting a car could be a very rewarding choice for traversing the land.
Crete is relatively large, having enough sites and natural wonders to set up a month-long itinerary – a trip well worth the time. There are a number of cities and towns to choose as a base for exploring or simple relaxation. Stay in Heraklion for the conveniences of the big city, or go luxurious with a 5-star stay in Elounda. The island’s party capital is found in Malia, and one of the best Old Towns is in the town of Rethymno. All around is the Cretan landscape that has established the island as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Glimpses of the past, including those of the Minoan civilization, can be caught at sites such as the Palace of Knossos, ruins of Phaistos and Gortys, the Palace of Malia, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Incredible beaches, more than 3,000 caves, Cretan cuisine and kafeneions, Spinalonga Island, and even age-old trees all add to the splendor and wonder of a stay on Crete.
