Danang has been an important Vietnamese city since the days of its traditional port. Even today, it's a thriving economic hub that oversees much of the commerce here in central Vietnam. It's a city often overlooked by tourists in favor of Hoi An and Hué despite the fact that it has plenty allure of its own.
A favorite place to book accommodation in Danang is on Danang Beach, a former playground for the US military. It's far enough removed form the city center that it draws weekenders with its growing hotel and entertainment scene. My Khe Beach is a similar beach resort that works as an alternative to Danang Beach.
This part of Vietnam was ruled by the Champa Kingdom thousands of years ago, and pagoda-like ruins can still be seen in the countryside. Before heading out to explore, stop by the Cham Museum in Danang to see a comprehensive collection of ancient Cham artifacts. Along with the Cham remains are a sprinkling of Buddhist grottoes in the nearby Marble Mountains.
Danang is on the cusp of something great. The entire city is investing in itself as a number ongoing beautification projects are joined with heavy-handed business development. Danang was already the home to one of Vietnam's finest beachfront resorts, and now international hotel brands are moving in to get their share. This is a great time to visit, as hotels near Danang are still very affordable.
Da Nang Airport is the third-busiest in Vietnam, making it an important hub for this entire region. The train route to Hué is especially scenic, and tourists usually fly into Danang and then transfer by rail.
