  1. More about Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier

The township of Fox Glacier is a small area in the shadow of Mount Cook, located on New Zealand’s South Island. This area is part of the famous New Zealand Glacier Country, but is slightly quieter than the more popular Franz Josef Glacier area.

The small village is easy to access via State Highway 6, which connects this area to many of the bigger cities. Once in the village, spend at least a couple of hours walking around the stunning Lake Matheson. A pristine lake with very well laid out walking trails around it, Lake Matheson is the perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet, or take unique photos of Mount Cook reflected in the lake. Just past the lake is a walking trail that offers some of the best vantage points to see Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, as well as the glaciers and trees that surround this area.

Fox Glacier is also the gateway to the famous Gillespies Beach Road, which is an 11-kilometer picturesque drive through a rainforest that leads to Gillespies Beach, a unique beach with black sand and quartz pebbles, not to mention the stunning Tasman Sea.

With so many natural attractions from which to pick, it’s easy to see why Fox Glacier is such an important stop on any naturalist’s journey through New Zealand.
