Lying on the border with Botswana, Mafikeng is the capital of North West Province. It sits next to the former capital of Mmabatho which now serves as a suburb to Mafikeng. This city boasts a mix of history and the South African experience. Mafikeng is set about 260km west of Johannesburg and is conveniently accessible via Mafikeng International Airport.
Attractions in Mafikeng are largely based in the history of the Second Boer War. In 1899, the city was besieged for 217 days. Forts, monuments, and the homes and offices of historic figures remain today to be explored and studied, including the Mafikeng Museum. For the more natural African experience, there is the Mafikeng Game Reserve. There is also the nearby Botsalano Game Reserve, both of which sport a range of wildlife. Other notable attractions include the Kortkloof Cultural Village and Leopard Park Golf Club.
