Nice

The undisputed capital of the French Riviera, Nice is one of those cities that immediately captivates all who visit. Long a favorite destination of the rich and famous, Nice is nowadays accessible to all travelers and even those on a tight budget can find an affordable hotel close to the city center. For travelers with more expendable income, hotels along the beachfront are the most popular, glamorous and expensive, while budget travelers can look for hotels near Nice train station which are often more convenient anyway.

The wide boulevard that runs the length of the beach is called the Promenade des Anglais, or the Promenade of the English. The most vibrant part of the city, this promenade is lined with restaurants and bars and during the summer months is packed with market stalls, street performers, artists and pedestrians. Beachside bars and cafes serve all manner of food and drinks, though for the real Nice experience, a Salad Nicoise with a glass of house wine is a classic French lunch.

A trip to the French Riviera just isn't complete without taking a dip in the beautiful Med. Private beaches charge upwards of 20 euro for entry and provide towels and sun loungers (essential on this pebbly stretch of coast) while free beaches can be found all along the shoreline and vendors selling cold beer and ice creams frequently wander through.

The old town, near Nice city center is another beautiful part of the city, with narrow cobblestone streets and well preserved architecture – some of which dates back to Roman times. The Colline du Chateau overlooking the Baie des Anges and harbor offers a spectacular view of the city. Not much is left of the ruined castle besides crumbling walls, though climbing the stairs to the platform 90 meters above Nice is well worth the view. The old town offers a good choice of accommodation and is only a short walk to the beach.

Nice is served by Nice Cote d'Azur Airport - a short drive from the city center.
