The city of Petra has been around for centuries, having passed through eons of civilizations, and now sits intact as a reminder of Jordan's ancient history. Once the capital of an ancient civilization before being absorbed into the Roman Empire and an important trade and commerce center, Petra was lost to time before being rediscovered by a Swiss explorer disguised as an Arab scholar in the early 1800s. Absolutely breathtaking, Petra was included in the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Within this grand archaeological park are a number of jaw-dropping sites. From the winding sandstone canyon known as the Siq to the Treasury and on to the Roman Theater and Royal Tombs, this fabled rose red city does not disappoint. The High Place of Sacrifice contains rock alters and provides views of Petra from above. The highest peak in the area is Mountain of Aaron where a small church and the tomb of Moses’s brother can be found. Petra offers a walk through some of civilizations earliest times, providing unique experiences, memorable sites, and an endless sense of wonder.

Petra’s city center offers a selection of accommodation to choose from, especially for those looking to spend a day or two exploring the magnificence of their destination. Wadi Musa is a neighboring town that provides a couple places to stay as well.
