Port Dickson

On Peninsular Malaysia's west coast, Port Dickson is a lovely resort community in the state of Negeri Sembilan. With its inviting white-sand beaches and exclusive resorts along with access to an historic fort and forest reserve, this is an ideal place to layover between Kuala Lumpur and Malacca.

Life in Port Dickson centers on the beaches, especially Blue Lagoon and Teluk Kemang. This is where most of the accommodation in Port Dickson is found, ranging from large, all-inclusive resorts to private bungalows with their quiet slice of the coast. Activities on the beach include snorkeling, water-skiing, windsurfing and, of course, swimming. It's also possible to charter a boat from the yacht club and spend a day exploring more remote portions of the coastline.

While days typically begin and end on the beach in Port Dickson, there is ample opportunity to get out and explore. Cape Rachado Forest Reserve is a major attraction encircling the cape where the Portuguese built their 16th-century lighthouse. Ascend to the observation deck for panoramic views of the sea and, weather permitting, the not-so-distant coast of Sumatra. Raptors migrate in huge flocks over the top of Port Dickson every March and April, making this an especially captivating time to visit.

Fresh seafood is a major component in local dishes, served in spicy dishes that are sold from local hawker stalls as well as in fine international restaurants attached to hotels near Port Dickson.

Getting here is relatively easy since Kuala Lumpur is only an hour's drive away. These resorts are a popular weekend retreat for locals, but the atmosphere is relatively quiet mid-week. A regular ferry service connects to and from Sumatra.
