Top areas in Reykjavik

Reykjavik is the quaint capital of Iceland and home to the vast majority of the country’s inhabitants. One might think of Iceland to be cold and gray, but this city is a splash of color amongst the green of nature. The city is relatively young when compared to its Nordic siblings, but it still has plenty of unique character to make it a worthwhile destination. International travelers are welcomed in via Keflavik International Airport with buses taking them the final 50km into the city.

Getting around Reykjavik is pretty convenient with most attractions being within walking distance of one another and an efficient transport system bringing the city together. Renting a car is ideal for exploring outside the city limits, especially for catching the northern lights. City strolls are a great way to kick off time in Reykjavik with their brightly colored houses and many open areas such as Austurvöllur and Hljómskálagarðurinn. Some impressive architecture can be seen along the way, including the towering Hallgrímskirkja Church as well as Perlan. Explore the nation’s history at the National Museum of Iceland or hit up the open-air Reykjavik City Museum. Getting down with nature is easy to do with several areas worth visiting within easy reach of the city. Visitors can go hiking at Esjan or head to the bay for whale watching. And a trip will not be complete without a dipping into the local culture by visiting a geothermal swimming pool.
