Top areas in Semarang
This large Indonesian city is the capital of the Central Java province, and although not a major tourist destination, it is an important center of business and commerce and has enough to keep leisure travelers amused. Achmad Yani International Airport is not far from the city center and is a busy domestic and international hub.
Semarang’s city center depicts a highly modernized Indonesia, while elsewhere the city's heritage is revealed in colonial churches, Chinese temples and the stoic Dutch architecture of Kota Lama, the Old Town. Visitors to Semarang can keep themselves busy for days visiting the city's many historic buildings and monuments. Sam Po Kong Temple is a great example of Ming Dynasty architecture, while Gereja Blenduk is a beautiful domed protestant church from the 18th century.
The beaches are also major draw cards for travelers, with snorkeling and skiing available around Marina Beach. Semarang also has theme parks that attract lots of domestic tourists and families, with Water Blaster and Lele Park being two of the most popular.
For shopping, the centrally-located Simpang Lima is the place to head. A large green square surrounded by hotels, malls, stalls and restaurants, it's immensely popular with Semarang locals and a great place to experience the city's energy.
