Great building

Location, heritage building, breakfast.

This is a marvellous restored Chinese mansion in the heart of the old part of Georgetown. It is a delight to be able to stay in it. So far so good. As a hotel it has flaws though. We had a small, dark, windowless ground floor room (a "standard room" but nothing like the photo on Agoda) which had a comfortable kingsize bed plus an extra bed (mattress) up a ladder on a mezzanine level. The bathroom was extremely basic (no storage, and two towels only) and the shower was unuseable (very hot water only) The room had no window, no wardrobe, and no coffee/tea making facilities. We reported the shower but it was not fixed. Then a lot of niggles. No light on the mezzanine level - how can one climb down safely in the middle of the night without a light to see by? Nowhere to unpack anything. Noisy. Mosquitoes. There is free wifi, which is handy. It's a bit slow but it's ok. Breakfast was pleasant and freshly cooked to order. I particularly liked the french toast. Terrible coffee though. There are no food and drink options available whatsoever apart from breakfast. No coffee/tea making facilities in the room. No minibar or snacks available.

A true gem

1) Character of the hotel. 2) Friendly and helpful staff. 3) Location

Beautiful place with great staff. The room was perfect and very comfortable. It was in the front of the old building so it was more noisy than probably the back rooms but not so bad as to be a problem. The whole experience was great.

Charming and Serence

Big spacious rooms, central location, great staff
8.3
What a great bed and breakfast. Location is central and walking distance to many major sites and is surrounded by a variety of restaurants which makes finding a meal simple. The establishment itself is wonderful with architecture and interior design that allows you to take a glimpse of the past; several charming details and antiques make it even more nostalgic. The staff was very welcoming, informative and accommodating. Our check in wasn't until 2pm, but we arrived early at 8 am. However they allowed us to check in early and even upgraded our room with no extra charge! Breakfast was delicious and rooms were big, spacious, warm, with all the modern amenities that made our stay that much more comfortable. The only thing is the walls are thin whereas you can literally hear everything that's going on outside from conversations amongst the guests, someone putting away silverware or shutting doors, etc. Didn't really bother us, however if you have kids like me (I have 3) it's not a place where they can run around or be loud at certain hours in respect of other guests. But definitely a place to relax and enjoy some calm away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Tranquil abode in quaint historic core of Town

One, it's friend and helpful staff (Jessie and Max were the best!), two, the cosy rooms and puts your mind and heart at ease, and last but not least, it's proximity to fantastic street eats!

Sublime, as always. Our second time there (this time we played host to family from abroad), both the Mansion and the historic quarter of Georgetown never fail to take us back to an idyllic moment and passage of time. We can't wait for our next time back (we just hope it isn't booked out!).

Amazing Hotel

Character and charm of the hotel, staff and location
9.3
We had an amazing stay and loved the charm and character of the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they are a credit to this hotel. Outstanding customer service! The little touches like afternoon tea on arrival and providing refreshments after returning from a day exploring make them stand out from the crowd. Location is very central and ideal for exploring Georgetown and further afield. We will definitely return again!

A "Home" in Penang

Cozy, Welcoming and Warm Staffs, Good Location
9.7
My 2 nights stay in East Indies Mansion was a wonderful one. We were warmly welcomed by the staffs and he clearly explained the details to us and also remind us to make ourselves at home. We were always been served with a glass of ice water after we came back from our tour in Penang. Thank you so much for the attentiveness. Being a heritage building, you can find nice, vintage decoration everywhere around the hotel. Our room was situated at level one near the breakfast area, though can be slightly a bit noisy, but it's not a problem for us. The bed was comfortable and the lighting is alright. Please bear in mind that there is no tv in all room, the wifi in my room is not really strong, but once you are in the lobby, its alright. I think it's a great retreat from all the technologies gadgets... The location is good, walking distance to the Jetty where you can find the bus terminal. I will definitely stay there again.

Unrivalled service, location and charm

The staff, the location and the atmosphere
9.7
I booked at East Indies Mansion hoping for the charm of a traditional Penang-Chinese merchant house. What I got was that and oh so much more. Nestled right in the middle of Little India you are literally on the doorstep of the best Georgetown has to offer. Just around the corner from the ferry and bus quays you can easily get around the island, if the delights of the old town are not enough. The house itself is immaculate, right down to the fresh cucumber water and delicious iced tea the wondrous Jess and Rajid serve you on arrival. The rooms are large and refreshing, with stunning original features but with all the necessary mod cons (including the all-important air conditioner). With gorgeous lounge chairs and an open communal kitchen out the back, you can really enjoy this heritage building at all times of day. They also offer great massage and laundry services for the weary traveller! However the best part of this hotel, hands-down, no contest, were the amazing staff. Jess was a constant source of information, as well as a consistently bright and positive welcome home. Anything you needed, any question you needed answered, Jess was there with a warm smile, usually with something you didn't even know you needed, like a cool drink! If you are really lucky he might even give you a song off his guitar! I would 100% stay here again, and would recommend to stay nowhere but East Indies. I can't even stress, or put accurately into words how we were enraptured by this charming house and the amazing staff, always smiling, helpful and who went above and beyond for their guests.
