Helsinki City Center
The best of Helsinki’s parks, entertainment and cultural attractions are right here in the city center. It’s a dynamic place for tourists to be based with ample facilities despite the grounded village atmosphere.
The Helsinki city center is full of neoclassical architecture, including the Kaupungintalo, a hotel-turned-city-hall. It’s bordered by Senate Square and Market Square, in the same general area as Helsinki University. Market Square is overlooked by the Presidential Palace, which is open for tours. The best way to arrange this and other tours is to stop by the Finland Tourist Board. Its’ located about two blocks east of the main block of hotels in Helsinki city center.
Museums are an essential attraction in Helsinki city center. A few of the best are Kiasma, a museum of modern art covering work from the 1960s on; Ateneum Taidemuseo, Finland’s largest fine-art collection, with pieces dating to the 18th century; the Museum of Finnish Architecture; and the Museum of Art and Design. There is even a postal museum attached to the main post office. Theater thrives here, with regular performances staged at Swedish Theatre and Svenska Teatern.
Helsinki city center is well-equipped for summertime outdoor activities. In the southernmost part of the city center, Vanhan Kiron Puisto (Old Church Park) with its shade-giving elm trees is a lovely place for morning and evening walks. Vuosaara golf course is also centrally located.
Accommodation in the city center is convenient for a number of reasons. Tourists visiting Helsinki prefer to be close to sightseeing attractions and cultural attractions, and hotels in the center of town are in walking distance of these. But the city center is also a convenient transport junction. The train station and city bus terminal are both in the heart of the city center, with connections to other major cities in the Baltic.
