09. Opéra
Located on the right bank of the River Seine, the 9th arrondissement is both a residential and business area around Opéra Garnier, the magnificent setting for The Phantom of the Opera. Today, it is still as opulent inside as outside, but since the opening of the Opera Bastille in 1989, it is mainly dance performances, particularly ballet, that grace the stage.
The infamous Moulin Rouge, marked by a red windmill on its roof, stands in the fading red-light area of Pigalle in the north of the district. Best known as the spiritual birthplace of the can-can dance, the Moulin Rouge entertains visitors from around the world with turn-of-the-century musical dance numbers.
The area is great for shopping, with two of the most famous Parisian department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, located here on Boulevard Haussmann. The Grands Boulevards area of shopping thoroughfares and flagship department stores is also in the south of the district. Close by, several covered passageways built in the 19th Century, such as passage Jouffroy, passage Verdeau, and the passage des Panoramas are charming early versions of the shopping mall.
The varied mix of accommodation options in this area offers easy access to the many attractions of Paris, and is well served by metro lines.
