Situated on the Right Bank of the River Seine, the unpretentious 11th arrondissement of Paris is an edgy, ethnically diverse area of the city that is home to the Place de la Bastille. This hilly and quaint neighborhood has retained a real Parisian atmosphere, with narrow winding streets and family-owned cafés.
The district’s main artery, Rue Oberkampf, is home to many of the city's hippest bars, music venues and clubs, filled with urban Parisians and expats. Drinks and food along this street cost about half what they do in more touristy areas like Saint Michel and the Latin Quarter.
The Place de la Bastille, the site of a former prison, is today a square home to concerts and the Bastille Opera, a magnificent modern opera house. Surrounding the square, and the rue du Faubourg St Antoine are fashionable cafés, restaurants, boutiques and galleries. The area has a large number of authentic Latin restaurants, and in rue de la Roquette there are a number of small Asian shops and restaurants.
The varied mix of accommodation options in this area offer easy access to the many attractions of Paris, and are well served by metro lines.
