Mitte

Berlin’s city center, including the district referred to as ‘Mitte’, is full of historic sites and cultural attractions. Site of the infamous Wall, this is the best place for tourists to experience Berlin.

Tiergarten is a park and residential area that was constructed in the days of the Kaisers. Main attractions inside the park are the Brandenburg Gate, an 18th-century structure that became a symbol of reunification, the Reichstag (parliament building) and the Kanzleramt (German Chancellery). Berlin’s most spectacular avenue, Unter den Linden, connects from the gate to the Spree River, passing grand sites like the Komische Opera Berlin, the State Opera (Deutsche Staatsoper) and the German Historical Museum.

Over the centuries, development in the city center has focused on extravagant city squares. Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most spectacular, as it dates to the 1600s and boasts magnificent French and German cathedrals. Much of the best accommodation in the city center is nearby, allowing guests to enjoy morning or evening walks on the square.

Another interesting pocket in the city center is Hackesche Höfe. This was an impoverished working-class neighborhood in the 1800s, but it later became synonymous with German counterculture. Now it’s an increasingly trendy place to rent an apartment or book accommodation in Berlin. One of the biggest nearby attractions is Volksbuehne Berlin, the leading playhouse in Berlin.

In the east quarter of the city center, Alexanderplatz became the center of East Germany, and it still has a collection of communist-inspired architecture including the city’s tallest building, the TV-Tower Berlin. Tourists may stop by for a view from the tower, but the real attraction in this area is Museum Island. There are several museums situated on this islet in the Spree River close to a few luxury hotels in the city center.
