Frankfurt am Main City Center
The busiest hub of sightseeing and activities in Frankfurt am Main is in the city center (also called Stadtmitte district). Hotels in the city center are especially convenient for tourists, though travelers on business may be better served among the high-rises of Westend.
Before heading into the streets of Frankfurt, consider climbing 200 meters to the top of Main Tower first. The view is spectacular, and visitors enjoy a clear perspective on Frankfurt am Main before the city launched a career in finance. From here it’s easy to see Roemerberg, where medieval Frankfurt first took shape. The Dom and adjoining Dom Museum stand opposite the recently rebuilt Paul’s Church. Turning north, the Old Opera is also visible from the tower.
After taking in the aerial view, most follow up with a tour of Frankfurt’s museums, including the Archeological Museum and the Museum for Modern Art. The Jewish Museum is particularly compelling, with exhibits that explore the once flourishing Jewish community that lived in Frankfurt am Main as well as the atrocities that were committed against them by the Nazis. Immediately west of the old city, this is also where the highest density of hotels in the city center is located.
Touring the city center is about more than mere sightseeing. The underground shopping venues around Hauptwache plaza are first-rate. A few blocks west is Fressgasse Shopping Center, lined with historic wine shops, delis and cafés. Next-door, Goethestrasse Shopping Center is especially up-market, with designer options to rival any high-street boutique in London, Milan or New York City.
Frankfurt’s urban park, called Stadtwald, offers an unlikely break from sightseeing and shopping. With nature trails, ponds and rest huts, this forested park is an ideal rest stop before crossing the river to spend an evening in the applewine taverns.
