This hotel does exactly what it says on the tin. It offers basic clean, decent sized rooms with comfortable beds at an affordable price (there are fridges in the rooms). The breakfast is fine - fruit, bread, boiled eggs, jam, cold meat, yogurt, cereal etc. Thankfully, they don't offer greasy English eggs and bacon and baked beans (the hotel is in Germany after all). The location is fine - Hamburg has an excellent public transport system (we got a three day group ticket at the airport for all transport and museum discounts for a tad under 30 euros), and even late at night, it is only a 5 - 10 min walk from Billstedt U-bahn station if there are no buses (last one to the hotel is at 00.04). During the day, you can walk through the Billstedt shopping centre (look for the McDonald's sign at the corner) to get to the station, or take a bus one stop. We had one amusing/embarrassing/annoying problem though: on the day we were checking out, reception gave new people a card to our room just before 9am, and they promptly came barging in - precisely at the moment I had removed my towel to get dressed. I don't know who got the bigger shock! Reception was extremely and genuinely apologetic when we complained, to the point that we had to laugh instead of being angry. Still, we are marking them down on staff performance because of this incident, but otherwise found them very helpful and friendly.

• Travel tip : Einsteins bar appears to offer decent meals on the doorstep of the hotel, and even though there is no Internet in the hotel, there is an Internet cafe next door. For a more sombre Hamburg experience, go and visit the Neuengamme Concentration Camp memorial and grounds - ask at the Tourist info at the Central Station for details on how to get there.
