Plaka
Hotels in this part of Athens are at the center of world history, and there's no better place to be stationed for travelers who want to be immersed in the city's – and indeed, western civilization's – past. Whether exploring the Parthenon, escaping to southern beaches or sipping a cocktail from a rooftop lounge of a five-star Athens hotel, visitors are sure to go home with more than a few lasting memories.
Plaka offers a wealth of restaurants, mostly serving traditional Greek fare. Tavernas line Adrianou, which runs along the north side of the from Thissio in the west to Plaka in the east. At the west end of Plaka, The Roman Agora/Roman Forum houses the Tower of the Winds, an eight-sided tower with a different wind deity on each side.
Between Plaka and Thissio lies Monastiraki, a bohemian district that is increasingly popular with tourists. Real bargains can be found at many of the boutique, souvenir and specialty stores that sell a diverse range of items, including antiques, arts and crafts and movie posters. The area also takes in the ancient Agora, Petralona, and Kerameikos –which includes the Assomaton Square and Agioi Assomatoi church. With some popular cafes and tourist meeting points, the area can get rather crowded in the summer.
