Rome

Rome is one of the world's greatest destinations. Fully deserving of its moniker as the Eternal City, people have been enchanted by Rome for millennia. Former seat of the Roman Empire, Rome may not be the political force it once was, but as a tourist destination and an all-round cultural capital it's tough to outclass and millions of travelers visit every year to enjoy its food, arts and an overwhelming sense of history.

Divided into several zones, Rome's most famous landmarks are either in the city center or within walking distance of it. The Colosseum, the 8th-century BC Palatine ruins and the Roman Forum are all located close to Colosseo metro station, a short walk from the shopping of Via del Corso. In the city center, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Stairs are all within a ten-minute stroll of each other; the Piazza Navona, nestled by the Tiber, is also close – just south of Vatican City.

Termini is Rome's arterial train junction. Collecting passengers from Paris and various points around Italy, it's a hub of activity 24 hours a day. Hotels near Termini provide convenient accommodation to train travelers and those taking the express rail link to Fiumicino Airport. Travelers will find buses, metro links and taxis in abundance here, with plenty of affordable dining, shopping centers and markets in this area as well.

To be fully immersed in Rome's cosmopolitan café scene, a hotel in the modern center is the best option. Close to the Spanish Stairs, the Via Veneto and countless cafés, accommodation in Rome's city center may not be so convenient for taxis, but is within walking distance of all the main sites and enjoys direct access to metro stations.

Food in Rome completes the experience. Espresso-fuelled mornings pave the way for carbohydrate-heavy snacks and lengthy meals featuring multiple courses. Many restaurants in the city center cater to travelers by offering set menus and to satisfy sugar cravings a gelato vendor of some description is never further than a few steps away.
