Barcelona
Capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is Spain's hippest and most cosmopolitan city. It boasts beautiful architecture, world-class museums and art galleries and some of the most fashionable shopping in Europe. Tourists arrive via Barcelona Airporta dual-terminal facility just a few miles outside the city center. Business travelers and passers-through can stay in hotels near Barcelona Airport, but tourists will want to be as close to the buzz of the city center as possible.
There are many hotels in Ciutat Vella, Barcelona's historic quarter. The architecture in these neighborhoods went up between the 13th and 15th centuries, spilling over the old Roman walls and laying the foundations for what has become the most complete Gothic quarter in the world. This is historic Barcelona at its best, with gargoyles watching from stoic cathedrals; lively fountains that are illuminated after dark; and rows of fashionable boutiques, cafés and tapas bars.
Another important zone is that of Eixample and Ciutat Vella, a well-planned quarter laid out in a tidy grid of modernist architecture. The most impressive of these is Gaudi's soaring Sagrada Familia, though most of his inner-city designs are within walking distance of each other. The shops and hotels in Eixample have a distinct character, setting an ideal tone for morning and evening walks.
Hotels in Barcelona are well-versed in tourism. The city has been a global sensation since the 1990s, but it was receiving the world's affluent and well-connected long before that. From its bustling Mediterranean port and lively boardwalk to its flamenco dance clubs and all-night bars, this dynamic city literally never sleeps.
