Stockholm
It’s easy to make a case for Stockholm as the most beautiful city in Scandinavia, though many insist it would win the same prize on an international scale. In any event, Sweden’s oldest and hippest city has a great deal to offer, from elegant, historic neighborhoods to funky boutiques and an exciting nightlife. Behind it all is a dazzling scene of fjords, lakes and islands.
Most of the shopping and entertainment venues are in Norrmalm commercial district. It’s located in the heart of the city, where most of the hotels in Stockholm are found. The area around Odenplan square is brimming with shops, restaurants and clubs.
Another cluster of entertainment venues centers on Djurgarden in Östermalm district. This is a more moneyed area with quiet gardens, chic jazz clubs and a range of shops on its fringes. The garden area hosts a few open-air museums as well as two prominent Swedish universities.
Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan) was spared the bombings of WWII. The grand parliamentary buildings and royal palace here are impossible to miss, and there are many stoic heritage buildings tucked away on cobblestone alleyways. Accommodation in Stockholm is especially inviting here in the Old Town, where it’s easy to get caught up in the nostalgia.
Another nostalgic neighborhood that can’t be missed is Sodermalm, with its gentrified heritage buildings on the waterfront. Old-world ambiance gives way to a livelier bohemian vibe here, where off-beat cafés, art galleries and rowdy clubs set the tone.
Stockholm - Arlanda Airport is the international gate of entry. Taxis, airport buses and an express train transfer incoming visitors to the city center. With so many enticing things to do in the city center, hotels near the airport cater mainly to business travelers.
