Edinburgh

Draped over a swatch of uneven high ground, Edinburgh is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It beguiles visitors with an intoxicating blend of the old and new world, and follows through with myriad commercial and cultural attractions. Standing at the threshold of it all is Edinburgh Airport, ushering visitors in from Europe, North America and beyond.

Crowning the Old Town is Edinburgh Castle, an emblematic fortress with 1,000 yeas of history behind it. The entire historic quarter (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) splays under it in a maze of cathedrals, stony architecture and parliament buildings. Visitors can walk the Royal Mile from the castle to Holyroodhouse Palace for the quintessential Edinburgh experience. The Old Town reels with atmospheric hotels in Edinburgh, spanning all budgets.

This is a city built on craggy hills. Across the valley from the Old Town is the New Town, a misleading title. Built in the 18th century, the New Town still has a few hundred years' of history and its own UNESCO recognition. Characterized by late Georgian architecture, tidy streets and leafy parks, the New Town has more commercial offerings.

Edinburgh receives a varied lot of tourists, and it excels at catering to mixed budgets and tastes. There are hotels near Edinburgh to suit everyone, spanning hostels and backpacker haunts to full-service luxury hotels. Be advised that the August Edinburgh Festival is alarmingly well attended, and hotel rooms book weeks, even months in advance.

Even outside of festival season, Edinburgh is a raucous place to visit. It's a city as well known for its contributions to philosophy as for its hedonistic pub crawl. For those with gumption, a night out in Edinburgh can be a long and lively event.
