The view was really great with prime historic sites right outside the window. Shops just below the hotel where you can find just about everything you need. The Rose street behind the hotel is full of excellent food options. Room was large and comfortable with a good sized bathroom. Staff were ok, not exceedingly friendly but helpful. Good breakfast buffet in a restaurant with large picture windows sharing the same great view.
Restaurant Tip:
Try to make reservations especially for the more popular restaurants as they can get quite full for dinner with wait times of up to 2 hours.

The stay was fine, the room was alittle too warm during the night and the breakfast was allowed to go cold. Service at breakfast was good. Our friens who booked at the same time as us had a room which was single converted to adouble with a three quarter bed so it was uncomfortable., I think.

Much better than I thought it was going to be

I was staying in Edinburgh for the weekend to watch the Scotland v Italy rugby game and to visit family. When I arrived at the hotel I was pleasantly suprised because although it is advertised as a 3.5* it appeared to be better than some 4* I'd stayed in. The check in was quick and effortless with a polite and friendly member of staff. Once I got to my room I was further pleased with how clean and warm it was - two of my most basic requirements for a hotel. There was a heater that could be adjusted to suit - a rarety in a lot of hotels i'm sad to say and the view of the city from the room was amazing. The bed was comfortable giving me a good nights sleep and in the morning I was refreshed with an excellent power shower. The room was small but that doesn't bother me, however 2 people I was travelling with upgraded their room to a larger one with a better view for a small supplement. I would also recommend having the afternoon tea in the restaurant, which is reasonably priced and left me feeling pleasantly satisfied . All in all I would definitely stay here again and strongly consider staying in a Mecure in other cities/countries if this is the set standard.
Restaurant Tip:
If you like Chinese food try Stack Dim Sum, it's a nice cosy restaurant that sells tasty food at a reasonable price, eg per head including drinks, about 0.5 mile from Mercure. A good experience as I'd never tried dim sum before.

We were pleased with the friendly and helpful welcome. Despite the fact that we had booked two double rooms and on arrival were told that only twin rooms were available the staff did all they could to find us alternatives. The breakfast was excellent buffet style, with well organised welcome. The rooms were comfortable and the two rooms we had booked were next to each other which was very helpful.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
We were visiting at new year for daughter's birthday- but also. fabulous location to view the celebrations and the fireworks, visit the city centre, easy access to Princess Street shops and cultural attractions. loved the national portrait gallery.Close to the main railway station and castle.
