Victoria and Westminster

Busy by day yet quiet by night, this affluent area of London has a great deal to offer visitors. Accommodation is cheaper in Victoria, where one of the city’s main railway stations is situated.

Buckingham Palace, the main residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is a scenic walk through St. James's Park. Tourists flock to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, which takes place either daily or every two days depending on the season.

Because of its closeness to the palace, Victoria is home to royal collections such as the Queen’s Gallery, the National Army Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Tate Britain houses a collection of British art from 1500 through to contemporary art, and is home to the annual Turner Prize.

Free Walking Tours from Duke of Wellington Arch, twice daily, cover many of the important sights in Westminster. Whitehall leads to 10 Downing Street – home to the Prime Minister – then onto Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery.

The Houses of Parliament, dating back to the 19th Century, includes the House of Commons and House of Lords. Visitors of all nationalities can witness debates from the Strangers' Gallery after first queuing at St. Stephen's Entrance. However, tours inside the iconic Clock Tower, ‘Big Ben’, are accessible only to Britons.

A number of kings and queens are buried at nearby Westminster Abbey, where monarchs are also coronated. Victoria and Westminster include a number of popular West End theatres, some magnificent Regency architecture and an abundance of good restaurants and pubs.
