A good value choice in Kathmandu. Lovely staff.

Location. Staff. Value.
Really nice staff. Excellent location, right in Thamel. Warm enough in winter with extra blankets. Nice breakfasts on the rooftop terrace. Hot shower. Rooms could do with a bit of renovation. We would stay again.)

Great place to stay in Kathmandu

Location, Friendly staff, Affordable
Overall, our stay in Festoon Hotel was great. From the airport, we were fetched and brought to the hotel (you must pay 500 rupees/$5 as tip). In the hotel, we were immediately given the key to our room without any hassle. The room may not look lavish enough, but for what we paid for, it didn't disappoint. The bed was cozy, the frontdesk was just a call away and there was hot shower (you have to wait for the water to run for 2 mins straight before it gets hot). We didn't experience any electric interruption during our stay but the weather outside was cool enough for us not to use the air conditioning unit or the ceiling fan. The staff was more than accommodating to entertain our concerns. Babu, the manager, even arranged our car/driver rental for our city tour for a very considerate price. Breakfast was served daily. Location is at the heart of Thamel, one of the hotspots for backpackers/hotels for tourists. You can easily find shops and restaurants around the hotel. I highly recommend Festoon Hotel when you go to Kathmandu. :)

An alright hotel and ok value for money

In Thamel, breakfast included
It's an ok place for price, you get what you pay for. Breakfast was good and supposed to be free bottled water but had to ask for it everyday. It's in Thamel so is walking distance to every boutique, shop, restaurant for backpackers. I had planned my itinerary and the staff provided a great city map which was very helpful. It is definitely worth taking the public transit if making trips outside city core to places like Bouddinath Stupa, Patan, Bakthapur, Changu etc... Will cost 10 times less than the best price that haggling with tuktuks and taxis can produce. City buses are a 15 minute walk down the main road facing the royal palace. Also, there is a great Irish pub next door to hotel. Beer is cheap, the owner is a great host, and many expats hang out there.

dirty, rotten hotel for European standards

very low price
We had a "basic room" with private bathroom - bed sheets extremely dirty (we used our sleeping bags, which is commonly done, but still...), floor dirty, the lower part of the bathroom door was missing. Very noisy. Door lock was a joke - and no locked front door, so if you had valuables in the room, they would not have been secure at all. But: While this would be unacceptable even for a hostel in Europe, this seems to be relatively common for lower Kathmandu standards. However, we did not return to this hotel when we returned to Kathmandu, but chose a more expensive one but with acceptable standards. While they offer transfer service from the airport to the hotel, an e-mail that we had sent prior to our arrival at the airport was not answered, so we had to take and pay for a taxi.

Excellent Thamel Hotel

Location, consistent wifi, staff friendliness
I stayed for 2 nights on my final days of my trip. I arrived quite late after a harrowing bus journey and the staff (mostly young men) were immediately very friendly in greeting me and showing me to my room to settle in, was very relieved! Staff throughout the stay were very helpful with restaurant recommendations and sightseeing, providing maps and plenty of information. I was able to book a private car for half a day of sightseeing and the airport drop through the hotel which was a luxury and much nicer than a taxi - would recommend, its worth the price! The shared bathroom on my floor was not used too often but could have been a little cleaner but i had experienced much worse in other places. The room was comfortable (the beds a little old but again, id slept in much worse). The sheets were clean and smelt particularly fresh! The rooftop was a lovely place to view sunset and one of the prettiest around with lots of plants etc. Quiet location despite being in the heart of Thamel, perfect for shopping and seeing Kathmandu. Have recommended and will stay again!

Incredibly helpful staff. Solid value.

Staff helpfulness, central location, comfortable beds
Very good. Clean, comfortable beds, priced right. Choose a room on south side. More quiet.
